Default Tanks Inc EFI Tank for 68 Firebird

This is the Tanks Inc EFI Tank. Just showed up tonight. All parts look very good to excellent. Tank and straps are powder coated. Has a Walbro pump.

Let us know how it goes ..... and draw up a schematic of all the lines you use and where they go.

Purdy...I have the same set-up in my 69 bird but used a a Classic Instruments SN38 sending unit instead per the advice of HWYSTR455 (Mike) who had issues with the one supplied by Tanks Inc.

This may sound like a stupid question, but is there a low pressure electric pump that fits in that tank so one can run a carburetor set-up and be ready in case they want to go EFI in the future ? I'm considering going electric pump but would like to have it in the tank.

Not a stupid question at all. Just run a special regulator designed to reduce an EFI pump pressure to a carb friendly pressure. I've been running one for 10 years with an in tank Walbro EFI pump (early Tanks Inc setup) and my Cliff Ruggles Qjet.

And if you ever switched to EFI in the future you wouldn't have to touch the pump or the tank.

A few more questions.

Was the powder coat extra?
What were the options as far as Fuel pump goes?
Is there any tray or baffling in the tank?

Have you considered running the holley hydramat? It sounds most of the high end pro touring guys do but at the same time I heard they don't last very long.

Powdercoating is part of the price and it's of good quality (I have the same setup). Fuel pumps range from 190lph to over 300lph walbro units as supplied by Tanks Inc. The holes in the tank are narrow so you need the thin walbro pumps. Something like the Bosche pumps will not physically fit in to the tank.

The tank is both baffled and has a sump tray for the pump itself. A hydramat would be useless in the application because of the tray and the use of the pump sock which acts in the same way.

I got my entire setup from Swartz Performance shipped for $470.00. They had a sale going on which they might still.

That was the tank, pump, pump sending unit, sender, gas cap, straps and rollover vent.

I got mine through Summit Racing, they sell the entire assembly. The price seems the same as on the Tanks web page, but you save on shipping. Shipping is free, but there is a 10 dollar surcharge. 10 bucks to get it to my house seemed like a great deal. I paid 505.72 for the tank, 255 lph pump, 90 ohm sending unit, and mounting straps.

Thanks for the great info, one more thing, do you have a return line ? Which pump and regulator are you running ? I'm a Q-jet guy as well.

Frank.

Yes, I fabbed up new steel 3/8" feed and return lines from the tank to the Aeromotive regulator. Then I ran a braided steel line to the Qjet with the adapter fitting.

I also run a small Autometer fuel gauge inside the car with the transducer kit. I installed the transducer in one if the extra ports in the regulator. Regulator is mounted on the passenger side wheel well next to the radiator overflow jug.

I also decided to keep things simple (and sort of GM looking) by mounting a stock Buick GN type frame mounted fuel filter on the backside of the passenger frame connector. Pump is a Walbro 255 l/hr for a Buick GN and many other GM's.

This setup finally cured all of my fuel issues that had plagued this Firebird for years.

If you scroll down, you'll see TBI pump listed. This would be an easy pump to regulate down to carb-friendly pressure.

The configuration is simple and exactly like a standard EFI setup (non-modulated). Feed and return the same size. Fuel filter on feed. Regulator maintains constant (in this case carb friendly pressure that you can fine tune) pressure to carb and returns the rest. System is constantly recirculating.

I would avoid the TBI pumps as they typically supply much less fuel. Even the one in the Tanks-inc link is only rated at 109 l/hr.

What kind of regulator would you use for a larger pump- say a 255LPh?

I'm using an aeromotive regulator made specifically for this purpose. There may be others though as I did this about 10 years ago. I think it's a 13301 or some such number. I can check it later and post but their website probably has all the latest and greatest.

I think that's the same universal regulator I have so transition to efi is simple. I got it on sale at Summit ($125)

I believe you're correct. It looks just like mine. Tonight I checked the one in my Firebird but there are no numbers on it. It adjusts pressure from 3-65 psi.

Here is an important tidbit from the product details.
"The installed low pressure spring will adjust fuel pressure from 3-20 psi, the included high pressure spring must be installed to adjust fuel pressure from 20-65 psi."

This has been in service on my Formula since @2006 and has worked flawlessly. Adjustment is simple and is basically set it and forget it.

Currently I'm in the process of finishing up another engine upgrade and with that I'm addressing some general housekeeping issues around the car. One of the areas I plan to work on improving is some sound deadening in the trunk and back seat area so that the pump can be quieter and more like a stock production car. It's certainly not bad now and no where near as loud as a typical undercar pump but I feel it could be quieter and more stealth.

You should hear the Bosch 041 that's underneath my bird right now. My car is not quiet, but even with throttle it makes it's presence known. I'll be happy to get the quieter Walbro pump in the tank and quiet that down a bit.

Thanks for the info, guys. I didn't realize the regulators could handle the output of a 255LPH pump, that's why I was thinking of the TBI unit. With this knowledge, there's no sense NOT using a 255 from the start. When I convert it to the FITech unit, it'll already be plumbed and ready!
