RACER-ACTOR PAUL NEWMAN HONORED WITH POSTAGE STAMP
Watched Paul and the All-Star cast in "The Great Escape" last night on MGMHD commeratation of Veterans Day
RACER-ACTOR PAUL NEWMAN HONORED WITH POSTAGE STAMP Paul Newman was recently honored by the United States Postal Service with the issue of a Forever Stamp to honor the legacy of actor, racer, philanthropist and SeriousFun Children’s Network founder. The stamp was unveiled at an official First-Day-of-Issue ceremony on September 18 in Cleveland, near Newman’s birthplace. Newman’s interest in racing dates back to taking a driving school while preparing to star in the 1969 film Winning, based on an Indianapolis 500 driver. He went on to enjoy a successful career, driving six times in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. A highlight was his IMSA GTS-1 class victory in the 1995 Rolex 24, when the 70-year-old driver finished third overall in a Jack Roush Racing Ford Mustang co-driven by Tommy Kendall, Mark Martin and Michael Brockman. Newman also finished second in the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans and captured four SCCA National Championships. Newman’s legacy includes co-founding Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Florida, an Official Charity of IMSA. He co-founded the camp in 1996 along with General H. Norman Schwarzkopf and key business and community leaders from throughout Florida. Camp Boggy Creek is one of 30 camps in the SeriousFun Children’s Network, an umbrella organization for the world’s largest network of camps for children with medical needs. A remarkable human being with an extraordinary vision, Newman dreamed of a special place where children could reach beyond their illnesses, and in his own words, “kick back, relax and raise a little hell.” “Paul Newman ignited a movement of philanthropy that has positively impacted millions of people around the world,” said June Clark, President and CEO of Camp Boggy Creek. “From the earliest stages of development, Paul was an integral part of the formation of Boggy Creek. His generosity continues to be an inspiration to our campers and families, supporters, volunteers, Board of Directors and staff. This stamp is a fitting tribute for someone who has done so much good for the children and families in Florida.” Camp Boggy Creek offers camping programs at no cost to children or their families, which are made possible entirely through the support of generous and caring individuals, corporations, foundations, healthcare partners and volunteers. All facilities and programming are skillfully adapted to meet the medical conditions of campers, ensuring that they can participate in activities such as soaring down a zip line, catching a fish for the first time, horseback riding and making s’mores at a campfire with friends. The stamp’s release highlights a year-long celebration of Newman’s legacy and Camp Boggy Creek’s Happy Camper Campaign during what would have been his 90th birthday. The campaign encourages donations of $90 or more in honor of Newman to help send a child with a serious illness to a week of camp. Individual Paul Newman Forever stamps and stamp sheets are available for purchase at post office locations nationwide as well as online at usps.com. http://www.imsa.com/articles/racer-a...-postage-stamp |

If I remember the year correctly, during the July 15 race at Brainerd listed above I was standing next to PLN at the driver's meeting. I was crewing for my cousin who raced in the same class at the time.
The Velocity network on cable will be running a Paul Newman documentary in a couple weeks; I saw an ad for it the other night but didn't catch the exact air date so watch your local TV schedule. |

I remember in the 1980's when I was on a race team out of Daytona/Ormond Beach, and going to Road Atlanta and Moroso Speedway in West Palm watching Paul in his Z-car.
Moroso was great because you were really close to the track, I believe he was running in the TransAm class.

I painted the last car he drove in the 2005 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. It was a Pontiac Soltice prototype owned by Silverstone Racing. He crashed the car around 180 laps into the race (IIRC). I guess you could call that my claim to fame.
