Default PMD Engineering Film - 1970 Ram Air IV vs 1971 455HO Race

Need your help. Hopefully someone has the YouTube link saved as a favorite on their computer. I am looking for the Pontiac Engineering Promotional film of Bill Collins racing the new for 1971 455HO GTO against Steve Malone driving the prior model year 1970 Ram Air IV GTO. If you have the YouTube link, I would greatly appreciate if you could post. I have searched YouTube and can no longer find the video. Thanks.

I guess that film has simply disappeared from the face of the earth, John!

He actually says that the 455 HO for 1971 is better than last year's 455 engine. Not the RA 4 ?

True dat!

Also note that post race - at the 43-44 second point in the video the engineers were referring to the "HO" and the "Super Duty".

I have seen references to the 1970 Ram Air IV Super Duty engine in the past, in the MPC and maybe elsewhere. AFAIK the Ram Air IV Super Duty was SUPPOSED to be a 400 using Ram Air IV top end and Ram Air V rotating assembly. Comments?

That was my understanding too Lloyd. Then a screw-up by the connecting rod supplier for the RA5 rod put the kibosh on it all?

That's the story (as I recall) as well.

That film of the 70 vs 71 Judge has always been one of my favorites! That's part of a much longer promotional film on the 1971 Pontiacs.

They never made the Ram Air Super Duty (LS-1) because of the unavailability of the forged connecting rods. Existing orders for the LS-1 engine in the 1970 Formula and Trans Am were not processed. On May 5th 1970, Pontiac announced the immediate release of the RAIV engine for the Formula and Trans Am as a replacement for the Ram Air Super Duty.

Mucho thanks for the clarifications, Mike.

BTW, do YOU have any idea where one can find the full-length version of that promo film, of which you speak?

Lloyd, that one is on my "Pontiac Promotional Films - Volume 1" DVD.

Many of the clips and commercials can be found through various searches on the web, but I have the cleanest copies (not masters, but I correct for color and sound) that I've found over the years. Takes an awful long time to put one of these DVD's together, so the price I charge, I feel, is reasonable.

You're welcome, Lloyd!

I always feel I have to reiterate the fact that these old films were never designed for the huge 70"+ TV screens we have today, and are far from high-def. People view some these clips on YouTube on their 3" x 5" Smartphone screen and they appear clear, but that's in a compressed format. The old promo and highlight films appear fine when viewing on a regular 19"-21" tube TV, which was the standard back in the day.

Back at you, Mike.

I'm prepared for the grainy look, too.

So was the 70 a RAIV 400 or standard 455?
Wouldnt be surprised the HO was quicker. The gearing was a better match to the hp/torgue .

Hood scoops had no "RAM AIR" nor "RAM AIR IV" callouts, so I'd guess 455. Could've been an L78 400 for that matter . . .
