He's got a problem with 5&7 backfiring through the secondaries. Nice job on the intake manifold, looks like it's cast aluminum. The olds guys have a few innovators in their ranks I see.
The revision makes a fog of gasoline over the carbs when all 16 barrels are fully open, guessing just too much open area for the size of the engine and there is no vacuum. Even if they are 700 CFM each that's 2800 CFM. Since there is no reports on performance, and this was done in 2006, I'm guessing it was a failed experiment. |

Tighten the secondaries flaps to limit the cfm, I think thats an offenhauser set up, cool looking, but would be a nightmare to set up. this is more like it.

Individual runner (IR) manifolding pretty much changes all the 'rules' on how much carb you can put on top of an engine.
For example take a look at the 289 Cobra with four 48IDA Weber 2-barrel carbs. Each carb has two 48MM throttle plates and 45mm venturies, that's as big as you can go with the replaceable venturies on the 48IDA. Each carb is rated at around 583 CFM. So 4 of them would have 2332 cfm, and yes I do realize 2-barrels are rated differently than 4-barrels. In reality that's barely enough carb for that 289. I used to run two of the 48IDA carbs on IR manifolds on an air-cooled 1835cc VW flat-4 that was my daily driver about 37 years ago, using 37mm venturies. So that's a 112-cube engine with about 1000 cfm of carburetion. It had great low-end pulling power and fantastic top end, it ran smoothly at a 500 RPM idle speed and pulled nicely from 1800 all the way to 7000+ RPM. These Weber carbs are infinitely tuneable and are specifically produced for use on IR manifolding, a Q-jet is designed to run on a dual-plane intake and is really not well-suited for use on an IR intake setup. None of us have IR manifolding on our Pontiacs or any other American V8. They either have a dual-plane intake where only one half of the 8 cylinders can draw from one side of the carb or a single-plane intake where all 8 cylinders can draw from both sides of the carb at the same time. You really are not comparing apples to apples when comparing carburetion on an IR manifold to carbs on a single-plane intake with a common plenum. IR intakes require a lot of throttle area, each cylinder draws from one individual throttle bore. So the intake on this Olds has one primary and one secondary separately piped into each cylinder, allowing about 375 cfm total to each cylinder with it at WOT. Probably about right, but again the Q-jet just isn't designed for that type of manifolding. I'd bet a single Q-jet would easily whoop up on that 4-carb setup. But it is neat and looks quite impressive. You'd surely be the only guy at the car show with one.

Dual Q-JETs was sufficient for me. Do like the video.
The vapors exiting is typical of a Q-Jet getting crosswind. Just try putting a leaf blower toward an idling Q-JET (no air cleaner ) and see what mess happens. I did.

What is up with all of the fluttering of the secondary air valves at wide open throttle?
I hope my q-jet isn't doing that under the air cleaner.

IR manifolds require more tuning than most are willing to do for street vehicles.
My experience with an IR had two 500 CFM two-barrels on a 2000 cc high RPM 4-cylinder engine. Factory installation, and it worked VERY well; but I would have not liked to do any tuning, other than the necessary synchronization. Jon.
