I bought a used engine that supposedly had a crane fireball cam in it back in the seventies. It was a 400 with a torker intake. That thing didn't have much off idle, but up above about 4000 it pulled hard.

This may sound sad to some, but have had the same cam in my street 69' F-Bird for ~ 30 years (put in 85' I think). Runs 11.60's @ 117.

I feel there is more room to optimize to achieve a lower ET if / when I get off my duff.

I don't know your combination but I don't think 11.6 @ 117 sounds bad at all. There are a lot of guys going slower with hydraulic rollers.

Is this cam from the Fireball Roberts era? Or just marketing?

I recall the 294 B was desired over the 294 A.

In the 80's I got a used 294 B and with 1.5s, and a Torker I, it ran okay in my 428 TH400 & 3.90/4.11 rear.

Next step was the ISKY Magnum 320 HYD with 252/252 @ .050 : what an amazing full range cam on the 428 @ 455. I attributed the amazements to the 104 LCs.

Tried customizing a couple Ultradynes with 104 LCs. And installed with 4 deg adv.
--> Does anybody run Street/Strip with 104 LCs?

Last High-Compression step was the Lunati 30705 (SPC2-320) with 245/255 @ : best off-idle I've felt on the 455 ran 11.0 ET, 123 MPH with ported D-port iron. Simply the best off-idle, cleanest plugs, temps, manners, performance from my efforts. Other folks have their favorites, perhaps same or better, maybe worse.

Since gone to low compression & cam in Sig with last outings showing 12.2ET in 3850 Lb on 89 Octane.

It's all in the Signature.

That series of cams was developed in the late 1960's early 1970's. I think Fireball Roberts had met an untimely end in a Ford Stock Car a few years earlier. Not a bad cam choice. Much better stuff was devevoped by Harold Brookshire around the same time. If you have good heads, it would benefit from some additional rocker arm ratio from a 1.5. If you already have one, I would run it.

Nice cam in a 455, it will also like at least 10 to 1 compression.

I've known several folks to use that cam in 455 builds with well prepared iron heads, and all of them ran well into the 11's with their cars...........Cliff

Those specs sound very similar to the current Crane HIT 284281 I have in my 455.

I loved the old Fireball in my 69 Judge. Back in the early 80's nobody could get past me. If I could find another one I'd use it again.
