Default Got schooled today by an onlooker.

I took the day off today and decided to drop the top on the Judge clone and go for a ride. The wife asked me to make my trip useful and stop to pick up a pizza at the grocery store for lunch on my way home. I always park a fair distance away from other cars in the grocery store lot, and when I walked out of the store I could see a truck parked near my car and a camera being held out the window. As I got closer, the gentleman driving the truck asked me if the car was mine and complemented me on the appearance. We talked for a moment and then he began to tell me about the kid he knew in high school whose mom bought him a brand new Judge coupe after the passing of his dad who was a firefighter killed in the line of duty. He went on to explain that it was orange, just like mine and had the 389 tri-power with a 4 speed. When I asked him which owner did the engine swap, he adamantly stated that it was the original engine because his mother bought it brand new for the boy in 1974. At that point, I knew that the best way to participate in the conversation was with my mouth shut.

Was it the one with the factory supercharger under the hood? My cousin's best friend's sister's hairdresser had one back in 68 but she totaled it.

My favorites are: (I've really heard these)

(After I told him the engine's a 400) "I thought so - that engine's way too big to be the 326."

Him: "Is that car a 1976?" Me: "You're way off, it's a '65." Him:"That's right: Pontiacs all looked the same between those years. "

Him: "your LeMans has GTO tail lights, huh?" Me: "no - in 1965, the GTO had LeMans tail lights." Him: "No - the LeMans light had a different number of fins. "

I don't know if this is true or not but I did read in one of mt GTO Identification books that the 65's did have a different number of fins for the GTO's and the Lemans.

Tempest is different.

GTO and Lemans are the same (GTO is an option based off the Lemans package).

You might be thinking of the Tempest Custom tail panel. In 1965 the GTO was an option package on the LeMans. As such, all of the trim and interior is identical between them with the exception of the GTO badging replacing the LeMans badges (and the deletion of the chrome spears).

I found out the 302 in my 69 z28 is actually a Ford engine, Chevy never made a 302. Also the guy had a friend who owned a z28 convertible. I asked him if it was a 4 speed or automatic.

I also love it when folks ask me what is under the hood. If they seem oblivious to Pontiac trivia at that point of the conversation, I'll just tell them it's a 469. I have been told "those were good motors", and of course, I have gotten the usual "oh, its the big block" and "isn't that a truck motor" when I mention 455. Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy talking with folks about the car, it just gets rather amusing at times. Being the type of person who likes to mess with people, it gets really hard to hold my tongue.

When people approach me while I'm out somewhere in one of the old cars I just sort of assume they don't have a clue, but appreciate the fact that they like cars enough to talk. Given the assumption, I generally keep my answers fairly vague.

Every now and then, though, I run into someone that actually knows a thing or two... Always a pleasant surprise when that happens.

At a car show last saturday, a guy asked if the 428 in my 66 GTO was a Ford engine. Caught me off guard, didn't have time to think of any smart-a$$ answer, so I just said "no its a Pontiac 428". He said "huh, never heard of a Pontiac 428".

Another guy walked by later and while discussing my car, I told him that I have owned it for 32 years, bought it while I was in high school. His response, "did you buy it new?" (Keep in mind that I was born in March 1966, the same month my GTO was made, and I look younger than I am, so I'm told). I said no, that would have been in 1983. I bet that I have been asked the "did you buy it new" question about 10 times in the past two years.

That's from Paul Zazarines's GTO Buyers Guide. He says the GTO received 6 rib tail lights and the Lemans 10. He just needed to change Lemans to Tempest to correct it. Books were gospel before the Internet

I've got this one a few times myself after I tell someone what year it is. I was born 10 years after my car was built. The funniest thing about that question is that the asker is always obviously older than me, but obviously too young to have bought it new.

I remember in the 90's when knowing all the old muscle car engines and models was still standard issue man talk. everyone knew my gto was supposed to have a 389. now i feel like an extra in the fast and the furious. hope those welds on my intake hold up when i pop the clutch in my stock supercharged hemi gto.

90s trivia - what kind of car did my avatar drive?
