Default Question on 1972 "whale" stripe

According to this doc, the white-ish stripe we see should be silver:

http://www.gt-37.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=3393

Is this true? Seems like all I've seen have been white but maybe the distinction is slight to the eyes.

I wouldn't take that one as gospel - says Gold for Cardinal Red & I bought my 50k original mile WW5 72 GTO with original paint on it & the stripe was white - too bad it doesn't show up in the picture. Early pictures of my 72 Lemans convertible show white as well.

silver would be for a D98 sword stripe car. strobe stripes were either black or white.

Nope.

The 9-stripe "sperm whale" stripes were non-reflective, black or white only.

Were orginals screen printed? Where the stripes were all part of the sticker? Or were they like pin stripes...all separate like the 455 HO decal?
I've seen both.

I believe the originals were screen printed & one piece Pat - here are some pics of the Sundance WW5 I had that was original paint.

Here's a follow-up question:

Could LeManses have rockers? GTOs? No, I'm not saying with the engine call-out, but just smooth rockers from wheel to wheel.

And "455 HO" decals would be placed on the front fenders just behind the wrap-around bumper?

And, lastly, for an HO, does the decal on the rear trunklid read "GTO" with a little "HO" askew? There never were "455 HO" decals on the trunklid, correct?

And the wildcard question: What if it had a ducktail spoiler? :-)

Thanks!

ahh..okay thanks Chris. I saw one a few years back that had the individual stripes...where you could catch your fingernail on each stripe. I didn't think that was factory, and all the repopped ones are screen printed.

Diego,
My HO lemans has chrome rockers with no call outs. Like GTO's. (72). In 72, I don't believe there were 455 HO decals on the front fenders. I've seen people put them where you are talking about, but if it were a factory GTO w/455 HO, it would be on the quarters. HO Lemans, there would be the 455 emblem in that location on the front fender, and that was it. No where would it say 455 HO. But, I believe it would have the "RAM AIR" call outs on the hood.

The deck lid, it's a crap shoot. Some got them, some didn't. It has been discussed here that the WW5 option group is the 455 HO car that got that decal on the deck lid. As it is stated in the option group documentation. But, some WW5 got them, some didn't. I think the same could be said for non WW5 optioned cars, but were 455 HO.

Splitters optional for the 1972 GTO but not available on LeMans with HO, correct?

Splitters were standard equipment on the '72 GTO and LeMans GT. All other '72 A-body cars with duals were equipped with the down-turned rear exit tailpipes.

Any and all '72 A-body cars could have been equipped with the anodized aluminum rocker panel moldings, depending upon the trim level. NO GTO's had a rocker molding located engine callout emblem though.

Non-GTO optioned '72 V8 cars did have the callouts. 350 and 400 cars on the rocker molding, 455 cars had a die-cast "455" engine callout on the front fenders - just aft of the sidemarker lamp.

No '72 GTO was equipped with a deck-lid mounted engine callout decal, except the WW5 optioned cars. They were SUPPOSED to have the famous "GTO H.O." decal. Some were so equipped, most apparently were not.

The HO-engined GTOs were also equipped with unique quarter panel "GTO 455 H.O." decals as well.

Hope this helps!

My Lemans convertible has the dual splitters under the rear quarter - believe Pat's hardtop does too.

You're right, of course. Old age SUCKS!

Methinks that I need to add LeMans Sports to the GTOs and LeMans GTs?

I know for sure that Luxury LeMans cars did NOT receive the splitter tailpipes when they were ordered with duals.

The pair that you linked on ebay is for a 1970 or 71. Here are the 1972 only exhaust splitters. They are unique.
