If it matters, I think Pypes come from China, that is what there competetor is saying and are not true stainless, a magnet will stick to them. Don't know about Dynomax.

pypes are "true stainless" just not the more expensive t304. think its a 409# or something like that. a magnet will stick but they dont rust like normal steel or cast iron will. pypes offers the 304 last i checked but its more expensive.
as for which muffler is "better" i cant comment, i use the pypes race pros dual mufflers on my car & they are fine. cheaper than dynomax ultra-flows & a little thinner case, same basic design though. |

I am working on a 1998 Trans Am. So I am limited on space. Just wondering of the two which would be better for my 462.

There are many different types of stainless, some are magnetic, some not...

The PYPES crossflow muffler is the only crossflow that is two separate mufflers in one case. That gives them a straight through design and better flow.
When PYPES makes a 3" version I'll have it on my TA. In fact I'd really like to try the 2.5 on there now. (I have a PYPES 3" system with an X and Race Pro mufflers now) |

400 series stainless steels are magnetic (knife blades are a common example), 300 series (including 18-8) are not magnetic. Kinda surprised that a muffler would be made of 400 series though, it's typically more expensive than 300 series.

Can't speak to comparison but I finally booked time at the shop I use next week to install a Pypes 2-1/2" crossflow system along with RARE manifolds on my TA. Its all been sitting in boxes since before Christmas waiting for me to get some time off work. I do plan to post before/after sound clips to add to the info base.
I put a Pypes system and the same manifolds on my Lemans five years ago and the "cheap" stainless version still looks great. Some discoloration on the downpipes due to the heat but no corrosion anywhere. I think 304 is overkill unless you are looking for the exhaust to outlast the rest of the car. I installed that system myself working on my back but this time I am going to pay to get the car up on a rack.

My car is on the rack and the old system is out. Logs and shop bent 2" pipes with small-case turbos of some sort. They were getting ready to bolt up the new RARE manifolds when I dropped by late yesterday afternoon.

I had no clue the Pypes products were made in China.

The guys at the shop had a lot of fun installing the RARE manifolds in the TA- they had to weld up some "custom wrenches" to get at all the bolts. But they said the Pypes system went together very nicely with no issues with fitment. The only downside is that the drop pipes from the manifolds are a little low- not surprised since that has been mentioned here before.
They were still tweaking, fitting and welding before shutting down yesterday afternoon. We will find out how it sounds later today.

Pypes crossflow video link
Alright- here it is, video of my new Pypes crossflow system: https://youtu.be/RWgYDf8R5j0
(Disclaimer- its not a burnout video, I didn't open it up all the way until I had good traction.) Its amazing how quiet the Pypes system is considering the straight-through muffler design. About the same as my original system but it sounds "racier" for lack of a better word. And a noticeable boost in performance compared to the old system. Perfect for me since I really didn't want to bug the neighbors. This is on a "mild" 455 with XE 268 cam and your results may vary. I'll also post a link on the "exhaust sounds" thread that has been running for a while.
