Rear coil spring sag/ Upgrade? 1967 GTO
Typical rear end droop. I have air shocks to give some lift. Any suggestions on rear coil spring upgrade. Stock springs were replaced with new ones and condition still exists. Thanks chaz069

Air shocks suck. If you replaced the previous springs with correct new springs and don't like the ride height, then you need to have a different spring.
This company will build you any spring you want: http://www.coilsprings.com/ Back in '95, I had just finished the 3 year frame off on my '64 GTO convertible. I used the "correct" springs from our vendor for the front and the rear. What I learned was that from the factory - these cars rode lower in the rear. I ordered a set of springs and requested .75" over stock. That's exactly what I got. |

My '69 had air shocks when I got it. I took them off and put in spacers to lift the back end. Now the car sits level.

I installed wagon springs in my hardtop and the car sat higher in the back.

I had the folks at Eaton build mine for my 67. Keep in mind these cars sat kinda low to begin with. When I commented to the 2nd owner of my GTO on how low the car sat, he produced a picture from 1969 and it was at the same height. If I recall correctly, I had them add 1.5 " to the rear and 1" to the front to get the ride height where I wanted it. Not jacked up, but higher than stock and no rake. irgoatmike

What these gents said: these cars originally sat very low, particularly in the rear. My solution would be to install a set of Air Lift bags. Cheap (under $100), Easy (an hour to install at most) and they improve traction and handling if plumbed separately. And, period correct: been around since the early '60's.

I put in all new springs & rear shocks in my 69 GTO & was not happy with the rear height. Old pics show those rears sagging with a stock setup, & I was hoping for at least a slightly higher rear stance. I ended up with spacers from Summit that raised it up 1 1/2" for $50. Very easy to install & the height was just what I wanted. It drives great, also.

When Pontiac designed the springs for their performance cars all the cars sat low in the rear for traction reasons. If you look at any pic of the cars from old add to pics of cars on line that are original, if they haven't been changed they all sit low in the rear. The T/A's sat about 2 inchs low in the rear when new. My friends 71 T/a when he bought it new I remember talking ot him about it because it sat so low in the rear, he said it was like that when he bought it & by the factory build manual it was right where it should have been.
