Default 1965 GTO California car

I have a 65 GTO hardtop 4barrel 4-speed California car. Does anyone know what differences there were under the hood. I am trying to restore to original. At some point the radiator was replaced [not Harrison] so at the same time I believe the upper hose was replaced. For some reason the upper hose is V shaped and must of hit the snout of the air cleaner so they just cut a few inches off. Is the 4barrel base the same as any other car and did it use a different hose or T stat housing?

Hopefully someone who is better versed on California cars will chime in here, but I thought part of the GTO package was variable fan? The fan on your car looks like the one on a 326 Lemans engine. Also either a fan guard or the fan shroud is missing, whichever was applicable.

Yes I think the 6 blade fan is also wrong, I do have PHS and the car is very original numbers matching so it is a GTO, the tag is rose correct riveted and the PHS completly matches the car. The alternator is also wrong but I found a correct date coded replacement. I removed the fan guard.

I think all 65 GTO 4 barrel cars had a pancake type round chrome air cleaner which had no snout, but I may be wrong.. Our host and other Pontiac parts suppliers have repros for sale, along with the correct hoses, clamps, etc. I am no help on what else might be applicable to a Califorina car as opposed to the other 49 state vehicles. I'm sure someone who owns one will chime in.

Obviously I was wrong for the CA cars. However, if the snout of the existing air cleaner base was pointing towards thge driver's side as the 65 depicted in the video, then his fiiting and tube to the valve cover wouldn't be in the correct position, would it?

The video car has the air cleaner facing the wrong way, you can see where the vent tube is far back and would be in the correct spot to connect where the K&N breather is, I think they are trying to cover that up. Yes I know the master cylinder is wrong, the car sat in one spot for 26 years and it had to be replaced along with the biggest flat spots ever seen on bias ply tires.

Your Fremont (BF) built 65 looks to be mostly correct under the hood. Must have been sold new in the state of California for it to have the 614 option (Positive Closed Circuit C/Case Ventilation System).

Unfortunately someone took a hacksaw to the OEM air cleaner snout. That is a one year, one model air cleaner so it will be difficult to find. The black painted vent tube to LH valve cover is correct. Also the sealed (not vented) chrome oil fill cap with the AC stamped in center is factory correct for the 614 option.

Upper hose, radiator cap, fan, alternator, master cylinder and water temp sending unit? are what I see being incorrect.

Can you post some pics of the exterior and interior (colors, options)?

Below is an example of what you have (65 with OEM Calif. air cleaner, etc.) and also has the wrong upper flex hose.

Would the 614 option be on the PHS anywhere? I wonder if the snout was used on any other cars, if I could find one, I could remove it and reattach it, looks to be just spot welded on. Working on more pic's, having upload failures.

Yes, box 61. Should have a 4 in it = 614

Actually it seems someone cut the end of the snout off in the car that started this thread it should have a trumpet style end like the one in the video. It is facing the correct way and he does have the correct looking tube to the valve cover.

I THINK not 100% sure, ... but I think you have Quick steering 612 (?) AND 614 Cali Emissions together for code 616

So if anyone has a uncut CA. air cleaner could you please measure the length on the snout and width of the horn end. I may have better luck finding a new snout and spot welding it in place of this one. Also if anyone has a correct fan or Harrison 4 core let me know. Hopefully all upper radiator hoses were the same and the correct one will go around the air cleaner tip. If anyone has a pancake air cleaner and can tell if there correct upper hose would work around this air cleaner let me know.

Agree.

612 + 614 = 616.

I would encourage you to drop the tank and see if the build sheet is still there.

It's a little easier to read (and gives a bit more detail) than the PHS IBM punchcard. There's a good chance it will still be there and be in good shape.

The tank was replaced just before I bought the car, the owner thought they needed to get it running to sell so they replaced the tank and sending unit along with all new brakes and tune up and tires. I did see the tires they were bad but I should of kept them, they had good tread and were dated from 1970. So I have manual steering how would I check for quick steering, is it less lock to lock turns?
