Default Which oil pan on a pontiac in a boat?

Looking for some knowledge/advise on what oil pan to run in my boat. 455+.040, TRW's, ported 670's, Nunzi hyd cam.

I currently have a stock baffled pan and wish to increase the capacity and/or install an oil cooler. Rear sump, as the engine faces forward just like a car.

I have ~2" of clearance below the stock pan now.

What have you run in a boat in the past? now? What are the best options?

Currently i am seeing 6000rpm=70mph but hoping to bring that down since i still run stock rods. The rods will be replaced this winter.

I have entertained the thought of adding a sump to the stock pan myself but i am not sure how easy/beneficially that will be.

I will replace the melling 60psi pump with an LPI pump/pickup when i have the motor apart next opportunity.

Nice Boat! Talk to our "Down Under" Boat Racer or to Steve Barchek (who also has a Pontiac Boat).

Default Which oil pan on a pontiac in a boat?

Thanks Tom.

It was actually Steve that provided me with the contact info to purchase this boat a few years back (an acquaintance of his owned it). It never really occurred to me to ask him which pan but I will do just that.

I will also contact "down under", thanks for that info.

I hear so many horror stories about how hard marine applications are on the oil in these engines so I figured more/cooler oil can never hurt.

So what is the largest capacity oil pan out there for a pontiac? I see canton has a 7qt pan, i was hoping to get into the 10qt area but i assume that will have to be custom.

I think a cooler would be more beneficial anyways but not sure which ones are good etc.

If you have $$$$, Think that Moroso sells John Langer's "Bad Aze" Drag Race pan that has more capacity and works very well, I am told. (But worth calling Moroso to inquire).

A full length sump just about doubles capacity at stock depth and width... drop the depth another inch for more capacity and kick outs down each side could add up to @ 4 quarts or more. Twelve to sixteen qt system colud be possible.. Clearance and fastener access along with starter/oil filter, exhaust clearance need to be factored in. Baffling is important. I'd avoid any of the factory windage trays there are better stronger choices.

That's a pretty small boat, how long is it and what hull?

Thanks for the info Bruce. I cannot do full depth at the front as a small crossmember goes underneath the pan. I have closer to 3" of clearance between the boat and pan at the rear though and could increase the depth for about 2/3rds of the pan.

T money-I found them online but noticed no pontiac stuff, I will call them on monday.

69goat1- it's a 17ft and supposedly a biesmeyer hull although everyone that looks at it says it isn't. No one can id it either, most likely a one off deal most figure. It was built for circle racing and had a ford engine in it prior to the previous owner switching it over to pontiac.

Thumbs up

www.kevkoracing.com

they built my circle track pan, which worked great at a very reasonable price. They do marine applications as well.

Shaker455- qjets are working great, in fact the motor runs awesome. I have a few videos but they are not very good quality etc.

I am hoping to dyno the engine this winter, guesstimate is at 550hp. My 9.5:1 car engine puts down 435 (so 500 at the motor?) to the wheels so I figure at 11.8:1 this one should be a bit more. The two motors are very similar.

J.c.you- thanks for the info, I will definitely talk to them.

I have a 19' kona jet boat with a tunnel rammed 496 BBC I built that is more fun than should be allowed by law... lol mine has seating for 6 but rarely have any more than just myself or myself and 1 passenger. Most folks are scared of 90+ on water...

Nice! I have only been 70 mph on water so far, hoping a little faster this year as I am re-gearing.

Awesome, some days I wish I had more seating (mostly for the ladies lol) but I rarely have two people in my boat as it is.

One thing they all ask for, an "oh crap handle" on the dash in front of the pass seat. I might look into that this year.

An oil cooler is an absolute must. they are very easy to install, just an oil line in and out and a water line in and out. Bigger capacity just means the oil warms up more slowly.10 qt. and a cooler will be fine.
I have a 66 Hallett V-Drive flat bottom with a 425 Buick nail head.
