Default Undercoating?

I finally got back on the restoration of my 64 GTO. I was thinking about using some undercoating/sound deadener under the body. Was wondering what people have used and what they think about it? I need something that will be fairly easy to apply with least mess possible. Sound deadening is important.

Here is a link to my restoration.

The 3M stuff is great, and cheaper than a lot of the truck bed coatings. But that's the last-forever approach.

Sound deadener and heat barrier, better done from the inside, and I'm a fan of Dynamat and Dynaliner. Many say you can do it cheaper with other products, but why take a chance is my opinion. You can search it here, many have done tons of homework on products, can benefit from their' efforts. Be prepared for an information overdose though.

Is the 3M stuff in a spray can? Or do you apply it another way?

Thanks!

So you think I should spray the undercoating on the inside and underside of the floor pans? I guess that would quiet it up more.

I like the look of the truck bed liner on the bottom. If I had to do it over again I would use Raptor liner on the bottom of the floor pans and Second skin's firewall thermal coating over the top of Damplifier Pro.

the 3M stuff requires a special gun/nozzle, and is specific to the product type. And it is called Body 'Schutz'.

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3...gl2XJ0F7P834bl

And that is why many use bed liner stuff, there's a number of products you can actually roll on, making it easy to apply.

3M and Eastwood make stuff you can spray into crevices that expands and is a rust converter and preventer.

http://www.eastwood.com/internal-fra...ay-nozzle.html

http://3mcollision.com/products/?PC_...glCMHZP9GPV1bl

Look for products that say 'self-healing'.

Those products above are really only for external use, and not particularly sound deadening or heat barrier. The DynaMat and Dynaliner, and the Damplifier Pro are for internal use, and very effective. Lizzard Skin is a spray on product, but believe it too uses a special gun. The mat products are easy to apply, and there's no real reason to overthink it.

I used 3M rubberized undercoating (out of a rattle can). I was happy with the results.

I bought a can of the 3M undercoating in a rattlecan, and I haven't used it yet, but I have also heard good things about it. I'm going to use it in my inner fenderwells.

As for heat/sound throughout the car, there are several heat/sound mats that roll out and apply with adhesive to the car floor, sides of the trunk, etc. I spoke to an old timer awhile ago, who told me to use the aluminized mats that are sold in the big box hardware stores (i.e. Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) for wrapping ductwork for sound and temperature. He has used these mats for years, and swears by how well they work for the cost. They're similar in construction to the brand name heat/sound mats (i.e. Boom Mat, etc.), but you can buy the material from the hardware stores for about half price compared to those made for automotive uses. I haven't installed any yet in my car, but it's on the list once I get my interior going. Another thing I've heard that works well, though I can't remember the name of it right now, is a heat/sound deadening material that sprays from a rattlecan. I don't know if I would use it for the floor or all over the trunk, but for small or overhead areas, like the underside of the roof (under the headliner), I heard it works great. Good luck and let us know what you end up using.

I also used this under my front fender wells about 6-8" wide to follow the tire, and was impressed at how well it went on. Seems like good stuff for a spray bomb.

Default Maybe not easy, but I like it.

This was a must do for me, but I had the shop do it, not sure if it was NAPA or Eastwoods, but it is the rubberized bed-liner stuff trucks. I plan on keeping the car a long time and driving it in all kinds of weather, so I didn't mind the cost for a lot of protection.

If you can flip the car and do the bottom like this, I think you will be happy.

I use the 3M rattle cans, and am happy with the results. Reason I use it is because it's easy to apply, and I didn't prep the floor very well. You can touch it up easy too.

If you do the underside of the car, like in a rotisserie, blasted, and properly adhered paint, then truck bed liner or body schutz is the way to go. That stuff will last as long, if not longer than the car!

When I say properly painted, just to say, it should probably be a self-etching chassis paint or similar.

The underside was wire wheeled clean and epoxy primed all gaps were seam sealed and top coated with a single stage urethane. It's so so clean you can eat a 5 course meal off of it.
