Question Anyone Race the OHC Pontiac 6 cylinder?

Back in the day the mags tested the OHC against the Pontiac 400 out of the showroom and resulted in some better ET's. Then all that info disappeared or wasn't done anymore. LOL.

Curious if anyone messes with them. Results? Type of chassis? etc?

Ken, I do remember that there was rear engine dragster that ran one probably back in the 80's. Don't remember what class, probably E/EA econondragster or something like that.

I'll see if I can find a link. Gary

Mine is going to be more of a daily driver/cruiser, but I want to do drag week when I get the turbo engine together. With the turbo, ported head (I have) and custom cam (I have) I'm going to try and squeeze all the HP out of this thing I can. Unfortunately the turbo engine is an easy year or more out. It's only talk until it's done.

This is the N/A engine.

I have 4.56 gears and a 200-4r in the car right now. Need to finish up plumbing the fuel and cooling system then I should be driving it.

Until a couple years ago when they switched to the GM Atlas 4200 six cylinder some Canadian guys were running the Pontiac OHC six in their Bonneville land speed Opel race car.

I always thought about putting two of the straight 6's under the hood and make a V 12.

That's my plan!! I want to see what it takes to push the crankshaft through 7 block mains. I plan on running individual equal length intake runners with EGT's on each exhaust port and do a fuel balance on all cylinders with the EFI, then crank the boost up until the intake temps get hot (through an intercooler), then possibly add a methanol/water kit and turn the boost up more. You'll notice in my pictures that hoses are running to the freeze plug holes in the head and the thermostat housing is where the water pump should be. I'm running a remote electric water pump and doing a reverse cooling system to keep the heads as cool as possible to keep detonation at bay. Those LS coils will light off boost well into 20psi territory if not 30+psi.

I have another OHC engine that the block's bore's sonic checked almost twice as thick as the block I have in the car now, so that's how I chose which engine to build first, I'll use the thick block for boost.

Testing out which exhaust I wanted to run on the car. It isn't tuned very well, I just wanted to make sure I had oil pressure, my EFI system was working, and it sounded mechanically healthy enough to stick in the car. It's basically a craigslist engine I completely disassembled, looked at, then reassembled with new gaskets. Used bearings, used piston rings, used cam, etc.

A kid a couple of years my senior in HS had a 69 FB with the sprint 6 in it, had someone go though the motor.

I can say I have witnessed that car put a hurt on some of the "big" muscle cars of the day, he had a steep rear gear in it, and would only run lite to lite, but in that distance, the car made habit of embarrassing many a hot rod.

One 69 396 Chevelle got spanked on more than one occasion.

My first car was a 68 Firebird sprint, 3 speed. After a bit of work, a change to 3.73 gears, and a 4-speed, I broke into the very high 14's at around 90 MPH. I remember shifting at 6200-6500 all the time in first and second. It would consistently beat my various friend's small V8 2bbl cars, but had trouble with 4bbl high compression ones. Had another friend who ripped out the stock engine and trans in his 240Z Datsun, and put the OHC Indian in it's place. It ran mid 13's and eventually ripped the IRS out of the Datsun.

Those Opal GTS were always a slick body. I remember some blown gassers using them in the early 70s.

Thumbs up Need For Speed...

Whatever Pontiac Flavor you choose there will always be a group that will push the envelope,
OHC 6’s owners are no different. Still a few who like to play with them.

Those are great pics. The Pontiac OHC 6 once again shows the SUPERIOR engine development done by the PONTIAC MOTOR DIVISION. The PMD logo was used proudly by Pontiac. The term "motor division" was used sparingly by the other divisions of GM. The OHC 6 belt drive, accessory drive and hydraulic lash adjusters were years ahead of of their time. It took Honda until just a few years ago to finally go hydraulic. The belt drive made it possible for so very many Asian designs to build low cost engines. A chain drive is so much more expensive in the parts themselves, and keeping the oil in the timing cover. If Pontiac would have been allowed to develop their own block for the engine, especially from aluminum, it would have been even more special. There were some aluminum slant 6 Mopars built in that time period, so you can bet Pontiac engineers were hoping for development money from GM.

You guys know that the Opal GT was a Pontiac design. It was supposed to be the vet killing Banshee. I believe that little bump in the hood was for the tall OHC 6 that Pontiac put in them.
If they had done what they wanted too it would have had a 428 with 2 fours. They did make the forged small journal cranks and the 2x 4 intakes.
