Default Is this a scam?

I received this e-mail today but, I haven't ordered anything using a credit card. Should I just delete it?

Scam scam scam.

Do you write the date as 30/12/2013?

I didn't think so. Non native English speakers do, though. That's a clue that the email did not originate here.

A very good rule of thumb is totally disregard anything that does not use your full name.

Anything you have ordered, paid, done, on the internet involving money will almost always address you buy your name in emails. Not your email address, not just your first name, but your full name. Other than that, perhaps a legit account number. Otherwise it's spam or worse.

Keith, I agree absolutely that this is a scam but you are not really correct in saying "non native English speakers" write the date that way.

I can assure you that in most English speaking countries, we put the day BEFORE the month as per the scam e-mail. Certainly you will find England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong and I'm sure many others use the day/month/year format.

Just my

Ian

Right. We write the month, then day, then year here in the US. I was trying to be non-ethnocentric without saying..."here in 'Merica that's how we do it!"....

So my point was that the note did not likely originate in the US.

Shoulda said "US English speakers", I suppose.

Don't ever open an attached file from an unknown person. Guaranteed it'll be a virus or worse yet, ransomware. Had it happen at work. Someone opened what they thought was an invoice copy, but it was ransomware that encrypted the hard drive and popped up a window demanding payment for an unlock code. Had to restore the drive from a backup.

Thanks for all the replies. I pretty much knew it was a scam and I didn't click on the link.I posted it to make others aware that there is something like this going around and to be 100% positive myself.
Again, thanks for the help.

I may have gotten this link here, but even if so it's worth repeating. This website 419eater.com makes it their mission to scam the scammers. It seems to be based out of the UK. It is hilarious the way they turn the scammers greed and lack of sophistication against them. Go to the Letters Archive section and enjoy. Start with the thread titled "Mark of a Moron" I travel a lot and am slowly working my way through all the stories when I have 10 or 15 minutes waiting for a plane.

Here's the link. Enjoy.

I got a new one today in my "junk" e-mail box - a "notice" that I was due in court and an invitation to "download the details" by clicking a link. Yeah, right. E-mail isn't proper delivery - I wouldn't have shown up even if it was for me.

This scammer's English was good, but he needed to brush up on law.

If you look at the link you posted you can see the file extension at the end is .zip .ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression. A .ZIP file may contain one or more files or folders that may have been compressed. Once "unzipped", there could be an executable file that will autorun and more than likely install some malicious code on your computer.

You should do everyone here a fovor and go back to your original post and delete the link before someone mistakenly clicks on it!
