I do not know what the stock cam spec`s are, but for a mainly street 301 non turbo motor, that 252 cam is going to want to be above 2500 rpm to get into the bottom of its peak torque band. If you had 320 plus cid that would be a better fit.
What gears are in the back of the car?

I went with a spec-5 (066) in mine which is a big step up from stock. you'll need to check your springs. stock cam only has .375 lift. it's tinny! anything over 200 at .050 is going to be a big change. I found the stock springs in mine were the same as some single spring SBC.

The lifters have a low band on them too. SBC maybe? I think normal pontiac lifters would work though.

The intake duration on the 1979 220hp TA 400cid motor was like 198' so if you ask me 206 duration is hot for that. Even if you had the gearing for it(like 3.90s) the motors power band with stock heads will be quite small and no fun to drive!

My 1978 motors manual has 2 different cams for 301, a automatic and a stick cam

Lift on them ....stick = .377 auto = .364

Only valve timing shown is Intake opens before TDC.... stick =31`... auto = 27`
Then you have to wonder how this timing is measured at .020 or .050 .005 or the slightest movement of a dial caliper

Something to consider... the modern day fast ramp lobe profile on paper is going to appear bigger than it is installed in the engine, how many times have we heard X cam stopped producing X power way early in the power band, I was expecting more from X duration at .050... Answer is in the newer lobe profiles they produce torque earlier on than one would think

I would run the XE250 over that cam. New springs, of course. Run the 864 lifter, not the 852 that the other Pontiacs run. Get straight studs and poly locks.

Usually not a big fan of the smaller XE cams in the larger engines but, this is where we need to build cyl. pressure with small cubes, low compress, AND poor heads.
