Default 17" MB Old Schools.....growing on me

I know most are not going to like this look, but now that I am going to need to do something different with my project I have been looking around at options. My #1 option is to do 8 lug disc brakes being I already have disc brakes on the front. #2 would be Rally II, #3 would be paint to match steel wheels with dog dish hub caps and #4 would be these MB old schools. I found a photo of a 65 online. These are 17x8 with a 4.5 backspacing. I calculated it out and should work fine.

Curious what your opinions would be.

I am sure there are a few haters out there

That would be me. Those are hideous.

I am in the same boat. I have to make a change away from 14". Vote for the 8 lug or the dog dish. I am leaning towards 15" 8 lug rims. I checked yesterday and there are still a lot of 15" tires at Tire rack.

My personal taste would be 15" black steelies with dogdish caps or 15" Astro Supremes. I just don't like the larger wheels with the rubberband sidewall tires.

Nah, not getting that look at all.... I wouldnt go above 15". A classic needs plenty of rubber, just dosent look right otherwise. Just my opinion though

I like them. Nice clean 5 spoke design. Doesn't look like grandpa's car with those on!

I would love to put a nice set set of 17's on my ride, followed by a big brake kit and some supension mods. To me it should be about enjoying the hell out of your car, Not worrying about what other think of it.

The purist will always hate change.

That pic is a bad angle for those wheels, because it is not showing the large openings between the spokes enough. I know a guy with those exact wheels on a 64 Buick Riveria and they look outstanding...except he has 20 x 9 on the rear, and 17x8 on front. Those "Narrowtrack" Buicks can get away with that a lot easier than us Widetrackers.
Anyway I am not a fan of the same size wheel and tire on the rear as the front, and wheels like this really need that big-n-littles look...so except for that look missing on the 65 pictured above, I like them. Depending on paint color, I might even be tempted to use the gunmetal ones.

Was not aware that they made them with the 5x5 lug pattern. Where did they come from?

Here are some 20s on a 1967 Bonneville with Disc Brakes. We didn't have any 15 inch rims with tires that held air so we stuck these on. How do you like them?

My opinion is that anything over 15" looks tacky on these cars. Big ghetto wheels do nothing to enhance the lines or function of the car. They are in the same category as the tiny 13" true-spokes the low riders used to use. If you have big wheels, you may as well Donk the car and crank up the hip hop. Tasteless.

I respectfully disagree...it's donk only if you do both front and rear in 20s (or more) AND jack the car up to the sky. My GP's rear springs have settled enough now that even with 20s on the rear and 30" tires, the car is nearly back to stock and level ride height. It's the Hot Wheels look I always loved as a kid.

Agree. I went the smallest sized 8 lug rims that I could and still find good tires. In my case, 235/60X16 Michelin Primacys as redlines done by Diamondback Classics, but it just doesn't look right. It's not outright donk, but certainly blingy.

The upside is a velvet, creamy, quiet ride in spite of how firm my suspension is.

There's just nothing available in a 225/70x15 worth a crap anymore.

I think redlines on 8 lugs look freakin awesome. This 65 2+2 inspired the look for my 62. I went with front disc brakes but just couldn't justify the expense for the 8 lug disc brake setup. Especially since I had a set of 15" rally II's sitting in my garage. The wheel tire setup on the above 63 looks absolutely stunning in my humble opinion. I also put a couple of before/after shots of a 66 2+2 where the owner went from whitewalls to redlines. I think it really changes the look of the car and gives it a more muscle car look. Either way the car is a real beauty. To me, it really just comes down to a matter of personal preference.
