A friend of mine in Norway has a 66 GTO with code 591 - "Speedo Gear Adapter" at $11.06? I'm not familiar with this? THX for any help!

these were used by GM when a "high numerical" gear was optioned. (like 4.11:1) they were adapted to the speedometer driven gear and gave a reduction. the normal gears for the speedometer drive could only go so far on the chart. the adaptors were used when you had to go "off the chart". There were some other adapters used for fine tuning the speedo like for police cars where the speedos had to be on the money. they gave minor reductions to fine tune the speedo when combined with the original gears offered.
this is what I remembered because my cousin had 4.11 gears in his Camaro.IIRC |

poncho in a can, Thanks for the reply!
The 66 GTO with this option code 591 happens to have a 3:90 Posi. in it and it's a factory 2 speed automatic with Tri-Power. Imagine trying to get out on the highway with that combo. YIKES!

Yeah, I had one back in the day with my 4.33's but don't have that car anymore. I recall the Bobcats all used them which is why I remember them.

I think I have one of those. I pulled it from a GTO decades ago, I believe it has Borg-Warner on it. I'll post a picture soon.

Chris, that 43,000 mile '64 GTO that was posted today has the 'speedo adapter' listed on the paperwork. It's that Alamo Beige hardtop with the trips, auto on the column, and 3.90 rear gear. Strange car. Also has metallic brakes!!

I have my question answered by the above gentlemen plus this 64 paperwork which supports the automatic GTO's with 3.90 gears came with this adapter.

Learning a lot here....now I just need to try and remember it! Fascinating stuff, IMO. Finding out what went onto and into these cars a half a century ago. Good post!
