welding with brake clean
A friend of mine just told me of a fellow he knows was welding some parts they cleaned with brake clean. He is in a coma and really messed up! Not sure he is going to pull through.
I had never heard of the danger before and wanted to get the word out to others.

That story has been posted here before about the dangers of certain kinds of spray cleaners. Also,,, Dont use it as a carb cleaner on a running engine!!!! Almost took me out one night!!

And for safety, always wear an approved respirator when welding, like a 3M 07184 P100. |

I had never heard this before either until watching an episode of Horsepower the other day. They mentioned it in conjunction with cleaning and storage oil off of steel plates before welding. They said to always use acetone to clean any parts before welding. I hope your friend pulls through ...

WOW. I use brake cleaner all the time, but not around flame. THANK YOU for the heads-up!!! This should probably be a 'sticky'.

Not all brake kleens are poisonous. Read the lables people!! The bad ones produce Phozgene gass. Ver potent & deadly nerv gas!!

Green brake clean is environmentally safe (hence green) but is FLAMMABLE.
Red brake clean is not environmentally safe (hence red) but is NOT FLAMMABLE. I train in the transportation of these kinds of chemicals. Red has the old "trichloroethane) in it and the green does not.

Holy Smokes. thanks for the remind. Had a fella welding aluminum for me: good thing these parts were laser-cut. I'm fixing to ask how the psrts got cleaned after cutting. Have more work for him.

Yeah, gotta watch anything that is chlorinated or contains chemicals that will polymerize or react in the presence of heat. Many shop chemicals that are fairly safe at room temp will become crazy poisonous when heated. Chlorinated brake cleaner, paint stripper with methylene chloride, urethane paints all become VERY toxic when burned or heated beyond their intended use temperatures.

Come on... it's Brake Clean, not a degreaser or starting fluid. And not intended for use on anything other than cleaning brake parts.
