Can someone identify these parts?
Got these in a Pontiac box showing part # 984527. The Online parts lookup tells me that these should be Instrument Panel Lights to suit 1965 T/6 or T/8
But to me they look like licence plate lamps? Am I right?? Can anyone tell me what they suit? Thanks Ian

Courtesy lamp that mounts under the dash as part of the lighting group kit. Mostly prevalent on convertibles since they don't have a dome light. I'm not sure if it is one or two per car as I have seen both. I've seen them on my '64 GTO convertible, and on a '70 GTO, and on Pontiac fullsize cars of various years.

I wasn't sure because the metal seems to be a lightweight pressed aluminium. I just thought they looked like licence plate lamps. On the strength of your answer, I think I'll put them on sale here. Are they worth anything?

I ordered the interior lighting option on my '64. It had one light under the dash. I had to take it off when I added gauges in that location.

I would have interest in that for my car. Come up with a fair price and PM me to settle up. Came factory on a 66 convertible I once owned. Shipping from your location may be a deal killer ! Thank You.

'65 FOR SURE...
Mounts to the bottom of the dash and as stated Conv'ts received two,
one on each side over the foot area and the HT's had one center over the trans tunnel. unless you had an 8-Track, then I think it was just moved over to the DS. '66-67's differ as they mount up under the lower dash in the bottom reinforcement brace.

What bothers me about these lamps is the box they are in seems to date from back into the early 60's or even earlier.
The box shown in Jeff Hamlin's pictures looks to be the right era for middle 60's. So I was/am concerned that to sell these I want the future owner to be happy that what I sell is what they want. Also, the base plate shape is slightly different on mine compared to Jeff's. Interesting when I look up the parts on the PY site, it shows as '65 only. But you guys are talking '64 & '66 as well. Just seems odd to me. One lens is in a plastic bag that is still sealed from the factory so I guess it hasn't been tampered with. Ian

I will say that the light you show is the same as my buddies '65 and they were screwed up to the underside of the dash, not up under like the 66-67 I posted.
However the Resto Guide show/list what I've always considered 66-67 as 64-67. To add to the confusion http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1972-GM...c6565f&vxp=mtr

My 1st 66 GTO HT had the ones like Jeff shows. Two of them....one for the driver's side and one for the passenger's side. The 63 GP I had also had 2, one for each side due to the console coming up to the dash.

That particular part number 984527 shows up in my 1935-1966 Pontiac Parts Book as correct for 1965 A body (Tempest 6 and 8). I have what appears the same lamp in my 66 post as it did come with the lamp group which eliminated the center mounted dome light and replaced them with 2 roof rail lamps.

Pretty sure the six digit part numbers were accessory kits.

I have had several pieces of both styles. I can't remember which style goes where, but I will check out my unmolested '64 convertible and report back with a picture or two. The one that Heybuck has appears to have had the wires cut, as usually these have a harness that can plug into any car.
I was at the boneyard a few weeks ago, and I got one of the single hole ones like Heybuck's out of a 1970 Caddy. To further confuse things, there is another style that has a smalle diameter lens that is also taller. I can't remember where I got those from either. |

Thanks for all the input guys.
Struck a deal with Tim John so they will be back in the US and hopefully on his car very soon. I'm just pleased somebody can use them Cheers Ian

I finally got back to my '64 convertibles. One is Fremont and the other is Pontiac. Both cars have just the single light with the base that is squared off. Its mounted rightabove the console. I'm thinking the one with the pointed base is for later cars.
I also was wondering about the cars I have seen with 2 lights. Maybe those had the lighting package? Or maybe they were later convertibles? I don't know... |
