Question Best way to store tires ?

I'm doing some work on the GV and it's up on jack stands, might be up there quite a while; the tires are almost new is it best to lay 'em on the side ?

From what I have read yes that's the proper way. I run summer and winter tires on all my vehicles. Except the GTO of course. Any way that is the way I store them. At garages I see them stored standing upright. Is it for space purposes and accessibilities I don't know. I'm sure you will get various opinions on this subject. For short term storage probably doesn't make a difference.

It doesn't matter... Just keep them indoors and off cement.

I bought 1 of those Tire Racks that you mount to the studs in your garage.
I have 4 snows on it and my 2 slicks.
Holds up to 400 lbs.

What's the problem with the tires on the cement?

By that, you mean the bonding molecules in the rubber?
I was going to say the rubber leaches moisture out of the cement, which leads to rotting of the sidewall cords. But your theory sounds plausible.

I would put them on some multiple layers of burlap, with plywood or cardboard under that.

I have seen a few car guys that used ladder brackets to put their wheels/tires hanging from in their garage. Keeps them up higher and off of the floor out of the way and they're cheap.

First I clean mine thoroughly. I like to use a wheelbarrow as I can submerge the tire in soapy water and scrub all three sides with a brush. Then I spray a low gloss tire dressing touting UV protection on all three sides. They are stored indoors but whatever protects the tire and preserves the rubber is a good thing.

I was told some of that dressing is bad for 'em

Yeah I've read that too, on the internet. Particularly about armorall and read it was the silicone in it. Fortunately I've never had a bad experience with any dressing and what I read about armorall is many years old. If the new tire dressings are smart enough to incorporate uv protection and make claims of 'protection from harmful elements that can cause cracking and fading' I'll give it a chance. I do stay away from the high gloss products, just a wild guess but my thinking the gloss products may contain more silicone?

I have been using Armor All (original) for 12 years on these tires and they look and ride brand new. Yes, Alvin, I am still suing these OLD tires at high rates of speed and am still in danger of killing myself and my car lol ---- but they look great!

I would also think the temperature of the environment plays a role. Yes or no?

Thanks for the Monday morning laugh PMD! I appreciate that one!

PS: I believe you're referring to a old previous thread where I posted photo and rant regarding safety, etc. & my still attached partial BFG Belted separation after a 100mph+ blast in our TA?

455 Granville: IIRC - doesn't your GV have a "Mafia Squad Car" sized (huge) trunk that you could simply place your removed tires and wheels in? If its good enough storage for the spare...
