Can some one tell me what has to be done to remove the turn signal switch on a 64
GTO in the car?

Thanks

Greg

You have to remove the steering wheel.

There's a metal shield on the bottom of the column that covers the harness. You need to remove the column support strap to get it off. I think you also need to remove the cup with the switch. I did it in the car in June, somehow can't remember the details, but it can be done. Don't touch anything under the hood. You want the shaft to stay where it is.

After you remove the wheel, you have to partially disassemble the column by removing the collar. This is the only way to get the C shaped plug to pass thru.

There is a notch that has to be cut into the column to make switch fit correctly.

Glad I found this thread - the Tempest I just got has a sloppy and noncancelling signal lever and the switch feels mushy when you make a signal.

I tried browsing the PY catalog but I kept striking out with the search terms...I will call and discuss with the tech dept; hopefully PY carries the parts.

Does anybody know what other year steering columns fit a 64 GTO. Maybe a grandprix?

Thanks

65-6 A body is a direct bolt in. Grand Prix and other fullsize cars will not. I have one '66 column and one '64 column in storage and don't recollect them being different.

Belated Happy Birthday Andre!

Is there any real advantage to swap to a later column?

Thanks for the wishes. I can't think of any advantage or disadvantage using a 65-66 column in a '64. It's pretty much plug and play. Trying to use a 67 column is a bit of a fiasco as there is enough differences to make it more difficult than I would want to endure.

My dash and column are all done and I know I will scratch up the column trying to get the turn signal switch. I thought about swapping but that is probably more work.

Thanks

Andre,

I wound up with an extra set of 64 headlight bezels can you tell me what they're worth?

Thanks

I replaced my switch in the car, right after everything was freshly painted also. Put a rag between the bottom of the collar and the shaft, that's about the only area at risk.

I think the only difference is the potmetal part that engages the steering column tube. If you use a 65 switch on a 64 tube you have to either notch the tube like they did in the article or modify the potmetal part of the switch. When I rebuild columns, I modify the repro switch rather than the original steering column tube. "Guide" switches are different than BPC too, but I really don't know that much about them.

Not to knock PY, but do your self a favor and get a NOS switch. I have tried two, both sucked. had to drive around with the left turn signal on because it would not hold position and just hang down.

Would one of you with a MPC post the GM part number for the '64 Tempest turn signal switch AND the cancel cam (or whatever you call the moving parts at the inside-end of the signal lever)?
