Thoughts on this cheater slick
SO I am semi restoring my 65 Tempest. Tring to figure out which way to go with it. I had planned a full GTO switcho chango, but now thinking about something....less seen (and cheaper)... I guess. I was thinking about kind of a stock old style drag car and leaving the stock hood and interior in it. Leaving the Tempest script, but taking off the mouldings down the side. But I guess my question is would some tires like these look "right" on a 65'? I know I have seen them on 62's and such, but not really on 65's. What are your oppionoins on them? And are there less expensive alternatives to them? http://www.cokertire.com/popular-tir...-dragster.html
Would it look silly with a 60's style script lettering on the side? Just kind of thinking out loud. Not sure I could do the lettering. I restore cars for a living and more specifically a painter. So the idea of letters freeks me out! By the way i would be painting it reef turqoise because the interior is already aqua. Maybe even throw on a dump truck scoop on the hood. Although I do live in Florida, and zero warning flash floods would make slicks and a hood scoop a real bad idea! |

I've seen this '67 a few times. The pie crust slicks and little bias ply front runners just look right on it. It runs in the high 11s.

Gtome, only one thing to remember about cheater slicks.... don't get caught in the rain out on the street. Dry highways only. I've seen a few unhappy endings from that combination.

The problem with the firestones I don't like is the center of the tread kind of bubbles out and the tire looks round when aired up.
There are ones being done by Hurst also that are recapped but have known vibration issues and coming apart. Some have good luck and some don't. http://hurstracingtires.com/ The ones I prefer are the ones made by Towel city. I'm running full slicks now, but these are what I would run on the street. http://towelcityracingtires.com/Pie_...er_Slicks.html

Yeah I would definately have to be careful. But a majority of my driving is 45 mph in town roads, but there is traffic, so i would have to still be careful. I could always get a matching set to the fronts, with some tread for the rears, for if I was to ever actually go somewhere in it.
Thanks Bill, I like the look of those Towelcitys, and the price is much better than the Firestones. Trac master tire doesnt look bad either. Maybe that would be a better choice for the street. Not really the same look, but overall a good looking tire. |

Their 27" tall front runners also look pretty nice to match whatever you get for the rear . The trac masters would be a better choice for more street driving imo.

Yeah after looking at some of the muscle cars in the gallery those cheater slicks look really tall. Not sure I want my stuff up that high! Wonder if the trac masters are as tall?

Radir sells pie crust slicks as well. I think these are what is on the back of the '67 I posted.

I think the cheater slicks would look "right". In the early 80's, I drove my '65 for a few years with cheater slicks.

great sites guys..and since we are on the topic, what would be a good cheater slick/drag slick to be period correct for early 1970s cars?

There are lots of ways to go when you are building a car. When I built my 64 straight axle and my brothers 65 straight axle we wanted them to look like period correct cars. So one of the things we had to pay attention to was the tires. Depending on the 'LOOK" you are going for, the right tires will "MAKE" your car.
We see so many old style cars/ hot rods that are really cool and then they go and put new style radials on it that look like they should be on a VW. You just have to decide how authentic you want your car to look. You wouldn't restore a GTO and then put a new stereo in the dash right ? Don't take me the wrong way because I like all kinds of cars. Everyone has there own ideas and budgets. You just have to do what's right for you. We used HURST Super Cushions front and HURST Cheater Slicks rear

I drove cheater slicks on the street on my old Impala in high school. I second don't get caught in the rain! It was just misting and I had to only go about 10 mph home and still felt like a dirt tracker pitching it sideways!
