Default Street legal drag tire

Looking for a new radial tire. My TA BFGs are old and hard (and getting smooth). Car is a 66 GTO 4 speed m21 w/GV OD, 12 bolt posi 4.10 gears Hop stop bars and adjustable arms. Tripower 428 w hyd roller XR288HR 450 hp est. I don't put a lot of miles on, but need more grip for the street to transfer weight. It transfers great w slicks at the strip, but have a race car so it don't go there much. Size 275 60 R15
Looking at BFG G force tread 1 or 2, MT, and others... Your thoughts???
Thanks for your time.

True street legal, I'd go with the Mickey Thompsons. I've got a set of 255's on my '65 and it pulls the front wheels with them.

X2 on the Mickey THompson drag radials. They ride very well, do ok in light rain if you get caught out with them. On a limited use vehicle they will last a good while especially if you don't spin or haze them. Last ones I just bought were a little different.....they had a few extra treads. Think they were called drag radial II or something.

Just noticed your in Midland. I live there from '98 to 2000. Do you know Mike Cooke? Whats he up to?

Here is another vote for Mickey Thompson ET Street radials. They are a good looking street tire that performs very very well at the track. Running the 295/60/15s right now.
I tried the comparable M&H. They were fine on the street but marginal at the track.

Nitto has a new tread design, they worked fine oin the stock '04 GTO. The older Nittos on my TA at San Antonio I could never hook. Mickey Ts hooked good until they got older.

Good point on getting older. My first set seemed to get hard and quit hooking after about 3 years.

I would look at the new MT ET Street Radial Pro.

The New Nitto Tire NT05R is good. But they only offer it in 17" + sizes.

It is a whole different story with a stick.

It may require trial and error.

Thanks for the comments, I was leaning to the MT's... True the w/o the stick the TA's would probably work ok... a friend with a chevelle gets along good w/them. The stop hop bars/poor mans 4 link works great at the track but seems to be harder to hook on the street... Hope to hear more comments.
Thanks, Guys!!!

Yes I know Mike well, he has been working on a couple Mustang projects, and is fixing up the TA for his daughter to race. Great guy!!!

I'd be a little leery of the 275 radial pro for the street. Not much tread pattern on them.
They sure do work well at the track.

I was going to suggest a Goodyear Polyglas... but then I saw you wanted a radial.

The M/T is the way to go for a street legal radial.

But those old school Polyglas hook better than any regular street radial.

I have been using Mickey Thompson ET Street radials on my 62 Catalina for years and they work great for me except if I get caught in the rain I drive like an old lady,Ha Ha.

If you plan for mostly street driving, I have found very good daily driver performance from the Nitto 55's. I think they offer darn good wet road performance for a drag radial as I have been in numerous gully-washers common in our west Texas climate. They do need help on the track but I use traction compound for a little extra help there when needed. I have tried the BFG's and I think the Nittos are better all around. I haven't tried the MT's but looking at the tread, I am concerned about wet weather performance. I have Nittos on two of my cars for every day driving but do keep a set of slicks on spare wheels for a just-in-case.

Vped.....are you referring to the Nitto 555-r or the 555? I ran the 555 for a while before going to the MT drag radials. For sure the 555 is a good street tire for all weather situations, but not much straight line grip. The 555 r is the soft compound version and appears to still have lots of tread for rain and such. Been thinking of trying some of the 555-r.

Has anyone tried the m&h drag radials? They have a few oddball sizes

I've been caught in the rain a couple times with my Mickeys they work fine as long as you are easy on the throttle.
