AC problems
I posted this in the cooling and heating forum, but thought I might get more exposure here. I replaced the compressor, drier, expansion valve, and evaporator on my Firebird which has an AC system out of a 72 Ventura. It also has the POA delete on it. The condenser was replaced a couple of years ago. When we tried to charge the system, the Freon seemed to go in slow. I wasn't getting any cold air inside the car. I noticed that the line from the evaporator to the expansion valve was covered with frost. My first thought is bad expansion valve, but the pressures did equalize when we shut the motor off. I would appreciate any ideas.

What is the ambient temperature, and what are the high- and low-side pressures?
Which refrigerant? R12? |

Sounds like the TXV is restricted. My air condition stopped working earlier this year in the GT-37 and I had to replace the TXV for a similar concern.

The ambient temperature (outside temperature) was 104 degrees. I'm not sure what the pressures were. I was inside the car keeping the engine at a fast idle. Now that the engine has cooled and the pressures have equalized, I only have 35 psi. I don't think he got much Freon in it. What is a TXV?

TXV = Thermostatic Expansion Valve
35 psi = 32 degrees F. First Guess: you're not measuring the pressure accurately. With everything shut off, and at ambient temperature, you'll have --ABOUT-- the same psi as the temperature in Farenheit if the system has R12. R134a runs a touch higher pressure. See the chart of pressure versus temperature in this link. http://www.chillers.com/PT%20charts%...frigerants.htm (Having nearly the same psi as the temperature F does NOT mean the system is fully charged.) You need to get pressure gauges on that system with the engine running, and the interior and engine temperatures stabilized. |
