Mechanical fuel pump prefilter necessary?
I'm in the middle of a minor frame-on resto and a pro-touring build on my '79 Firebird. I replaced the fuel lines and am wondering if a fuel filter should be added before the mechanical pump?
Its a stroked 461, 850 Demon, used for pleasure on good weather days with the occasional 1/4 mile test'n tune and there is a pre-carb inline fuel filter. |

prefilter?
i'm not the final authority by any means, but have run lots of pontiacs--street & race. i always run 1 filter between the tank/cell & pump & another close 2 the carb. if its 3/8 line, which most is, the fram # is G15 & wix is 33033 for metal inline 3/8 fuel filters. prices range from $2-$5 from ebay/amazon to summit. i think the napa # is 3033, but it will be higher. i connect em 2 the metal line with rubber hose & wide clamps, so as not 2 cut the hose. but there are certainly other better lookin, hi $ filter set ups if your gonna show it.

I would thing that a 79 Firebird would have a filter in the tank on the pickup. The fairly standard GM "sock filter".

Because the gas of today is so bad I'd use a filter before your fuel pump just to save the pump. Also the sock that is in the tank is there to keep out big stuff only!! It's there to keep out chunks of rust & big stuff only. Use the extra one.

I use his 100 micron filter right off the tank with no issues.

I ditched the sock and use a RobbMc.

I'd still keep the sock on the tank sender just to be sure & to stop the big stuff from getting in the line, but I still use a filter after the tank & before the pump just to be extra safe & the on either in the carb or an after pump in line filter.
