Default 63 Turn Signal Switch

Anybody know if there are other GM models that share the same turn signal switch as our Tempests? Trying to find a replacement switch for a 63.

A 63 Tempest/Lemans turn signal switch is a one year, one model only switch. There is no other switch that looks like it or that will fit or work in that column. At least not that I have ever seen. Almost all used switches have 1 or both cancel tangs broken off of them by now.

Ditto That - X2.

It's a pretty complex (and unique) part that has it's weakest link at the point of highest stress. (GM was years ahead of the chinese on that!). It would be a real PITA to try to repair one.

Those switches started breaking before the new car smell had gone away. The supply of NOS has been on the endangered species list for more than a decade. If you can find one for less than a hundred bucks consider yourself lucky.

I found one on e bay 3 years ago with the housing around it, no one bid on it cause all you could see was the housing but I saw wires coming out of it, seller sent me more pics and there it was, 60 bucks and I was the only bidder

\\\\ WINNER !! ////

I broke one of those switches while going through an intersection one time.

I felt it snap and knew immediately what it was. It wasn’t worn down by wear and tear; it wasn’t material fatigue (Nylon? - Plastic?); it wasn’t from pushing it too hard (well, it was, but not in the way you would expect). It was TIMING and bad design…

I was coming into a busy intersection with the blinker on, nothing special about it (yet) the problem occurred when a car in front of me suddenly stopped (unseen pedestrian ahead – whatever). It became one of those high intensity maneuvers when you have to act fast with one eye on the rear-view mirror… and you want the car behind you to know what you are doing.

I had to spin the steering wheel fast one way then the other way. In the middle of that, the cancel cam shut off the blinker (like it’s supposed to do when you straighten out the wheel) - but I wanted the blinker back on - so I moved the lever back at the critical point where the cancel cam was trying to do its thing (steering wheel moving fast) and SNAP!

A lighter touch on the lever would have let it resist and saved the switch, but things were happening fast and I probably moved it with a heavy hand.

Every other car on the road handles that situation without missing a tick, but for a 1963 Tempest turn switch, it’s ‘GAME OVER’.

Mine was already broken when I got the car.I have a NOS one still in the bag in my cupboard of spare parts and have had it for many years. I'm afraid to install it because that plastic part is probably brittle from age and would I would soon be back to where I am right now. Manual cancel. I'm used to it.

I had several switches but when it was time to use them they were broken or broke 1st try. Luckily, I had paid stupid money for a NOS one on eBay and it works fine. It just seems like the switch mechanism itself must be similar on other GM cars. The connectors are Packard Electric and are readily available. John

I don't really care if the cancel cam tabs are broken. I just need one where the wiring is not deterioarted and is intact at the cam and the plug.

I have good ones on my cars now but you have to baby them.

I've been thinking that it might be a good idea to put a tempest plug on a universal column mount, (take off the original actuator arm) and use that for cruising. Then take off the column mount and only use the original when they invite me to Pebble Beach.

Not sure if this is the one that fits our cars. Anybody confirm this?

That's the strong part that doesn't break. They are easy to get. Not a $50 part. IMHO worth somewhere from free among friends to maybe ten bucks for a stranger.

The piece that that one hits, on it's way around, is the part that breaks.

Default $10 part

I have a couple of those in good condition from "parted cars" that I would sell for $10 each. Definitely not a $60 piece!

Default turn signal actuating cam

Wish I had a box full of good turn signal actuating cams, but I don't. The part we were talking about, that is on ebay, is the turn signal cancelling cam that bolts to the steering wheel. It seldom breaks and is easy to find, so can't be worth as much as the actuating cam (which usually has the plastic "ears" broken).
