Default Radio-Stereo option code 405 questions

My 72 has this option, and I am wondering if you had this option, did you get two speakers in the back package tray?

I think both rear speakers were on the right channel and the center dash one was on the left. Just want some verification on this as my original back speakers are missing. Anyone still have theirs they can take some pics and post?

I found this shot, and think this is the correct way they came from the factory. I just haven't seen the box surrounds with the cut outs like that before.

Is the speaker grills metal on the topside?

AND. . Would it have had this fader connection? : http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-1970-19...vip=true&rt=nc

Pat those are the correct covers with the cutout. I've got a original speaker I can get the nimbers off of and take some pictures of. Also have several of the meatal speaker grilles. Never have run across a car that had the two rear speakers though? As far as the fader control depends on which radio you have, some of them had built in fader control not this add on one!

My -71 Vert has the 403 option (AM/FM stereo) with one front and one rear speaker even if it has cut outs for two speakers in the rear (Rear speaker was mounted on the right side)

Thanks lyn and Loffen. Great pics, thanks. I don't think I've ever seen the dual speakers like shown above. One or two speakers? Anyone have two?

In '71 the 403 option was not stereo.

The '72 radio options were one front speaker for the AM pushbutton (401) and AM/FM pushbutton (403) radio.
When you upgraded to the rear seat speaker (411) you received a radio with a built-in fader and an extra speaker (RR), mono sound with it playing front, back or a combo.
The AM/FM stereo radio (405) included the one rear seat speaker and played in stereo, L/R channels, but I don't remember which was which.
The stereo 8-track player (412) and cassette player (414) also came equipped with the one rear seat speaker.

I don't think any of the A, F, or X bodies had two speakers in the rear. Just the B and G.

I think.

For '70 it was AM pushbutton (401), AM/FM (402) or AM/FM stereo (404). Rear seat speaker (411) and stereo 8-track (412) were the other options.

As to your manifest, I could only guess F=AM/FM (or maybe fader) and D=dual.

My 72 came from the factory with the 405 Stereo Radio option. I only have one front and one rear speaker on the right side. Also even though it's a factory rear speaker it has a black speaker grille.

My 72's Build Sheet list TYPE "F S" for FM Stereo and SPKR "D" for dual speakers (front & rear). So yours would be a mono AM-FM with front and rear speakers. And from what I've seen with a factory rear speakers the radio would have an internal Fader Switch.

Pat, the separate fader you have listed from eBay auction was used on AM-FM mono's. I've pulled them along with original AM-FM mono's, mainly from '69 & 70 Bonnevilles. Believe this style fader was also offered as part of an accessory package.

Have had dozens of '68-72 A body AM-FM Stereo's & 69-72 GP AM-FM Stereo's over the years & every one had an internal fader.

Have several pedestal mount Pontiac 8-tracks, & the oddest one, I pulled out of a loaded '72 Bonneville. It has extra wires, newer style big connection plugs on the harness (one is orange) & has the fader function on the 8-track unit

So what's up with the dual speakers in my shot above? That's from a 72 WW5 car.

Dealer added or someone removed them from a B-body or G-body Stereo cars and put them in.

Dug this out of the 1972 Pontiac Service Manual, in accessories.

But why did they make the space for two speakers at the factory if they did not offers two rear speakers ?

Could it be transferred from Chevy or Olds ?

Just a guess, but isn't the package tray the same on A bodies as G bodies? Since the G body is resting on an A body 4 door frame.

Checked my 40 year old Pontiac Parts Book. Don't know what the difference is but A body 2dr and Grand Prix have different part numbers for GRP 12.971 seat back shelf. I also noticed that 69-70 had a different number then 71-72 A bodies.
