Console His/hers question - lights ?
Just fixing up my shifter and noticed something
On the console (main section) what could be a plunger position when the lid comes down. Also at the front of the box (inside ) two holes in the console box itself . Are these for lights ? Craig |

Here's a picture of mine.
It looks to be the same as a glovebox light switch. Power to it comes from an orange wire in the same harness that feeds the light for the shifter. Needs to be a wire that's hot all the time. When the glovebox door is closed, the switch is off. Opening the door, turns on the switch, which shines the light thru the lower hole. |

Did some factories install console lights on other not? Just curious because my Arlington built late-68 doesn't have a provision for the light switch in the console.

Thanks Tekheavy
thats so cool Now the light Does the bulb just sit in the outer area or should there be caps / covers on the holes. You would think they would have covers to stop items getting out of the box. |

Yeah, you would think there should be some kind of clear bezel in the hole. If there was, it ain't on mine anymore. The light bulb just shine thru the hole.

No lens; it's just like the glove box lamp. The light just shines through the hole in the bin liner.
Here's the picture from the 68 Service Manual: Orange power feed should be in the console harness. Orange wire; 12V to the lamp holder/switch assembly; black wire goes from the lamp housing to ground. |

Funny how now a days even cheap cars come equipped with Ac, cruise, power everything but even high end cars don't have underhood, glove box, console, lighter (or even sometimes trunk) lights. go figure!

Which cars/years had lights?
Revisiting thread, hoping some experts can clear this up.
I am finishing up a conversion to console shift and saw the same diagram, but my console does not have a provision for a light in the bin. I am putting it into a 70, but bought it used and have no idea what year it came from. My console housing has a part number 979-X885 (X is under the nut, can't read it). Wondering which years/interiors/options had the light? It is a cool feature, but there is no hole for a switch under the lid in my console. Do aftermarket bin liners have the hole? If so, seems to beg for a light. If not, then they would have to be cut, which could be an opportunity to destroy a new part. I also don't see the complete harness listed in catalogs. I see, and ordered, a single-wire connector and socket for the shift indicator light, but that may not be correct. |

68 only and I suspect some later 68's were built without it. I don't know if 68 with manual trans had them or just the autotrans consoles that already had a wiring harness for the revers lights and shift indicator
