Default '65 v. '66 fuel tank vent tube

Hey guys,

Is the vent tube for the gas tank that goes out by the rear bumper different for the 2 years? I think we had a discussion about this, and they changed it from one year to the other. '65 guys were talking about it leaking and we compared how they were made if that helps jog memories.

Trying to help a fellow member with a part. I will try to find one in my stash tomorrow and post a Pic of '66

I'll rummage around also.

63gpman:Your pix jogged my memory and CRS. The 66 vent tube is different in that it goes up into the trunk and back out. Pontiac threaded it that way because 66s don't have the tail panel cover like in 65.

Thanks very much. Totally different. '66 is 'U' shaped like a short water heater element.

What have you guys done to stop fuel leaking issues on this vent? I had to abandon the use of it..too much spillage on acceleration. Added a new vent, via a welded 3/8" tube through the fuel level sending unit assembly. Then routed a rubber hose from it to the area above the rearend, then down along frame to rear of car. And the battles continues....it still pukes some gas out, especially on hotter days.

'66 works fine. If you could bend a 'U' and fit it in might solve the Prob. The other reason that '66 might work is that the short piece of rubber tube nearly always gets crimped. Maybe it is crimped all the way closed so that is why it does not leak.

Another idea is to use a station wagon cap and plug the vent on the neck. They have a 1 way vent that will close if fuel pushes to the top of the cap. These are still available. I'll try mine on the '65-6 tank neck to see if they are the same diameter. There are several sizes for the different family years.

Here is the '66 vent. Note the factory crimp in the metal tube.

I tried the wagon cap & is same diameter but not deep enough throw on the bayonet tangs to go into the neck & twist.
