Default Loving my newly acquired 74 GTO

I have had her for not quite 3 months now as I have been looking for one for several years that was really nice. Long story on how I got her but as soon as I got her home around the first part of September I was contacted by Hemmings as they wanted to do a small article using photos of the car. How could I say no even though I did not have a lot of time to detail it as highly as I wanted to but here is a link to the article on line.

Congratulations, Jody. How did you manage to get hooked up with Hemmings on that deal? I had my car 40 years before anybody wanted to do an article on it...

Well, I purchased this car about 3 weeks before the Pure Stock Drags and Hemmings attends that race on a regular basis. Had a couple of friends that knew and one of them is a good friend of Matt Litwin of Hemmings Muscle Machines. One thing led to another and it happened. The funny thing is my 64 GTO that I sold prior to getting this one was a concours gold POCI and GTOAA, MCACN Gold car and by far the nicest car I have ever had and never saw the camera lens at all....LOL. Actually that is not true, I did get a shoot with that car for Pontiac Enthusiasts and was supposed to be out in the next issue until they went out of business

I liked the car, & have liked the 74 for a long time. It's really closer to what the true GTO was designed as. A light car with a big engine so you could go fast. Although I wish they would have put the 400 in the car to stay with what Deleoren had demanded. Nothing less then a 400 in the GTO. I think I misspelled his name. But over the years we have heard rumors of some of the 74's getting a 400 in them from the factory, but I haven't seen one yet. But your car looks great & I love it almost as much as my 73 GTO.

Great car.
I second what Rex said.
Supposedly the red headed stepchild of GTOs, but I'd take one any day.

Thanks everyone. Going to do some Pure Stock Drag Racing with her next year. Already been to the track once this fall, learned that I could not get any timing out of it (25 total). Took distributor out and with some weight and spring changes that is no longer an issue. Had a radiator leak also, was just a cap but glad I was able to shake the car down before I actually ran it there next year.

It has an open 3.08 rear. Only ran it 2 times. 2.57 60ft. Missed 3rd and went 16.6 at 82mph with 25 degrees of total timing. The next day I took care of the distributor issue and have it set now at 6 initial and all in at 35 total. I can tell a seat of my pants difference but will not be able to get back to the track this year. Magazine articles say about 15.77 at 97 was what she would do back then and will be happy with that or better.

6 initial sounds awfully low. My '72 350 like the initial around 12 and 36 to 38 total. Are you still running the stock heavy springs in the distributor?

At the strip I was at 12 initial but that only got me to 25 all in and I could barely start the car going anymore. Took the distributor out and played with weights and changed springs to lighter ones. Now I am at 6 initial and 35 all in. Feels much better. I will play with it next year and see what kind of timing it will take. I have not even got into carb adjustments yet.

Thanks and yes, same car. Not really an article about my car perse as it was a buyers guide on 74's in general but I enjoyed it as well.

My thoughts exactly. Very little about YOUR car IMO. Still was good to see it there!

It is kinda funny as a few years ago (2008 ish) it was either HPP or Muscle Car Enthusiast or something but they did a First Gen Firebird buyers guide and used my wife's 68 Firebird 350 HO convertible. I guess I have those covered....LOL

Anyone ever buy a car they have wanted for a long time and then shortly after have a car offered to you that you have wanted even more? This just happened to me last night and I couldn't sleep. I only have room enough for two classic cars in my garage. Realistically I should not even be considering this as I love my 74 GTO but it could be a great opportunity to get into a very nice rare Pontiac. Upgrade on the bucket list if you will. And of course I would have to do this quickly. I have no choice but to sell it if I want to do this. Now I just need to decide if I want to advertise the car. Hmmm.

Build a bigger garage or find a place to store one of them. As you mentioned about finally getting a car you always wanted, you'll probably kick yourself in the arse shortly thereafter if you sold it for another car.
