Default repop RA Formy air cleaner ideas needed

I have a (Parts Place) Taiwan made RA ( WU3) air cleaner. It sort of wobbles on the Q jet, doesnt sit right, looks like the front underside isnt "formed up correctly. Also and more importantly, once the element is in it, the lid doesnt touch the base. Now it came with no cushion in the rim, but its close, and not touching anyways.
Is there someone who runs one of these that has a part number for a air cleaner element, if I can beat the bottom side into submission?>
Compared to my original, It looks good ( 400 style though), buts not right..
any ideas?
trying to make this work, and look ok, so I can get the original to a member for one of my old cars, where I took it from in '82 !

I will check to look what element is on Gramma's car, which is running that repro aircleaner. The T/A element is too tall, I think.

Fram CA342 is what's on Gramma's car and it fits perfectly. I do have to run a 1/2" spacer between the 1972 carb and the air cleaner base to clear the throttle and kickdown cable brackets, though.

It is the orginal 1975 350 but is running a complete 1972 cast iron intake and 1972 carb with 1972 bracketry, etc.

AH, the throttle body collar! Thanks Steve!. Ill give that element a try. What did you do for the cushion in the rim of the lid??
being up so high, the boots are bending it due to being flattened? guess around 1/2 inch isnt much

No ring cushion in the lid, the air filter element seems to cushion it enough. Doesn't seem to be any problem with the boots compressing. It has the same wear marks on the snorkels that my 72 has with its original air cleaner.

Steve is running a Trans Am replacement filter, which is a little bigger around but 1/2" shorter than the A212CW filter that should be in there. I would use a NAPA 2102 as I think orange belongs on a Chevrolet or MOPAR.
The lid gasket can be purchased at TPP under CB10060F, for $7.00.
It's too bad they spend all this money and can't produce a quality part.
Also, scuff and paint the unit. Electro-plated part is sure to rust after a while.

I used a section of closed cell foam from a rubber supply place for the lid seal. I used a ball pein hammer and tapped up the hole that locates over the bowl vent a bit...that helped it seating.
I made a small bracket that bolts to the front of the RH head that supports the intake on that side, on the LH side, I added a rubber spacer on the bottom of the intake tube that then is supported sitting on the valve cover fins (non standard covers/breathers).
Ames offer the correct repro supports for the RA aircleaner, but they were on back order when I tried to buy them.

You can see the L bracket I made in this pic, bolted to the front of the head.

Wow, Thanks HFR, Leigh and Steve! I guess Ill be painting it.. Glad that was mentioned.. I do have factory brackets, but the original was rugged, didnt figure I would weld on studs if not needed.
Leigh, no spacer on top like Steves 75?

I have no issues with clearances, but I'm running a Lokar throttle/kickdown cable assembly and cable bracket, which locates off the rear LH carby hold down bolt/stud.
The aircleaner sits on the regular gasket ring is all.

Smile K & N Filter P/N for RA air cleaner

Is anyone running a K & N or similar filter in their RA air cleaner? Is there a part number that fits better than others? Just curious if others have tried this.

Thanks - Kevin

My formy has it's OEM ram air aircleaner assembly. I run a K&N filter # A140A8 which I believe may not be made anymore. (I bought it nearly 20 years ago).

The E1590 that Form74 mentions doesn't actually fit my OEM base very well. It's inside diameter is 11.625", and will snap down into my base (although somewhat snug and has to be pushed in). The A140A8 I run has an inside diameter of 11.750" and drops in snug much easier and fits better.

But the real problem I have with the E1590 is that it isn't tall enough to seal against the lid. It's only 2.563", the A140A8 is 3" and seals perfectly to the lid in my OEM assembly.

I'm guessing these repop bases aren't as deep as the originals? Don't know, just a guess, but that 1590 that K&N now calls for doesn't work in mine. Maybe it's a superceded number, but it's obviously a different size.

The repop bases are not as deep. Got my seal from the parts place today, that helps, but they send enough to do at least two air cleaner lids!

Interesting to know. I had wondered why the only ram air filter K&N calls for now is too shallow for my base. Looks like the OEM size filter I have is no longer listed on their site anymore.

Sort of odd how the aftermarket can't seem to make the air cleaners exactly to size, and then K&N follows suit.
