Default When did the fuel pumps go from longer to the shorter ones?

I am having trouble with my new metal fuel line that goes from the pump to the carb. The car is a 76 Trans Am with a 455 engine with AC. I see that from around 1974 back some used a longer fuel pump (had the larger section at the bottom) and mine has the pump with the smaller section at the bottom. If my pump was the longer one it looks like the line would connect like it should but right now its about 1-1/2" to 2" below the fitting on the pump. Is there any reason the longer one would not fit my application? Why is there different ones? My fuel pump is brand new and installed already so I do not think the parts place would exchange it.

The longer one is usually used on the higher HP engine or with AC.
(usually 350's or 2 bbls had the shorter pump)

It is basically the same.
The bottom section just holds more fuel.

I would think your car should have the longer pump?

Default I think mine might have had the longer pump?

I just looked at my old fuel line and years ago I cut the metal line up by the carb and put a filter in line but it looks like the metal line at the bottom might have been bent a little to match up with the shorter pump? It might have the longer pump but I cannot remember. The parts places show the shorter pump but now I am not sure if its correct. Does anyone know for sure what pump came on a 76 455?

Default Any reason longer pump would not fit my engine/car

Any reason the longer pump would not fit my car/engine correctly? I think there should be plenty of room but maybe someone else knows of a reason to stay with the shorter pump.

I have a 455 in my 75 TA and it has the bigger pump on it so you should have no problem. I would guess the new pump costs just as much as a new line.

The canister style pump is usually for A/C cars. Different years have the fuel lines at the bottom of the pump facing different directions. Does you car have a vapor return? If you want the longer pump for your car try looking up the part for your car with A/C and 455. It should do the trick.
