Where were YOU in '62?
I was, uh, not born until 1967. But in my mind American Graffiti was set on this weekend 50 years ago. One of my favorite movies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Graffiti http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069704/ Favorite lines: "Wow, he's really fast!----Yeah, but he's stupid!" (Between Carol and Milner) "Wow, you're just like the Lone Ranger." (Toad's gal Debbie) "I'll die soon and then it will all be over....." (Drunken Toad) Here's a bunch more: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069704/quotes |

For me it was the summer of 65. American Graffiti typified everything that was going on in my life. The location was Portage Mi just south of Kalamazoo and it was Schwatz's Drive In and drag racing stoplight to stoplight down Westnedge Ave.

There are some things my dad never talked about much. When I was young, we lived in between Ft. Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, just north of Fayetteville NC. My dad was a civilian employee of the military and worked on tanks and heavy equipment after WWII. I was about 5 yrs old in September 1962. I remember is my parents were very nervous about living in between Ft. Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. I believe my dad quit his job and moved back to Monroe NC because he was worried the standoff might turn into a nuclear war and Ft. Bragg/Pope would be one of the first targets.

At that time, I was a small kid living in Hampton, Va. Like you, Mike, my father was working for the government. He was in the Army and stationed at Ft. Monroe, Va. Besides Ft. Monroe being the Army Command Center (TRADOC), we were next to Langley Air Force Base, the Air Force Command Center. Within base property lies NASA. A few miles away is the Yorktown Naval Weapon's Station (think missiles being manufactured in underground bunkers) and also Ft. Eustis.
Then, on the other side of town you had Newport News Shipbuilding making carriers and destroyers. A few miles across the river is the Norfolk Naval Station. I would estimate all of this is within a 50 mile radius, with most within 20 miles. Talk about feeling like a target is on your back! |

12 years old growing up in Hagerstown, Md. I would get together with my friends on Saturday morning and we would ride our bikes to Mason-Dixon drag strip, and spend the day. But, if we weren't home when the street lights came on we had to answer to our parents!! And, that usually meant "THE BELT"!

I think that's why some kids started busting street lights! My father used his belt too.

I was 19 years old early in '62, standing on the sidewalk in front of the neigborhood Pontiac dealer, Nelson Brothers, watching them unload new Pontiacs. Among the others on the car hauler, were two cars named GRAND PRIX!! I stood and watched, wondering why I hadn't heard Pontiac was about to release a new nameplate. Also wondering if I'd ever be able to afford one!! My dad always bought 4 doors, so the Grand Prix didn't interest him. Little did I know there would be a GTO in two years---and I bought one!!

I was three and my parents had just bought a small farm just outside of Stockport,Ohio, and getting my butt busted for constantly being in a stall brushing my dad's big Appalosa stallion. That horse hated my mom and brother and dad was afraid I'd get hurt. I never had a problem with that horse.
