Default ROD SIDE CLEARANCE

hi all was just wondering what was acceptable for rod side clearance ??

I am building a 400
.045 over
stock crank
eagle rods
ross dished pistons
sd stump puller cam
solid roller
722 heads bowl blended port matched

.002 main brg clearance .0015 rod brg clearance on 1 and 2
.003 end play on crank
.009 rod side clearance on 1-2 journal

that is as far as i have gotten end play seemes a little tight and rod side clearance seemes a little tight both are within spec acording to a 69 service manual ??

just wondering what others thought??

I believe that rod side clearance is a little tight for a performance build. It's my understanding you need more clearance so the oil can get out of those bearings and keep things cool.

Which eagle rods, the pontiac 6.625" or the 6.8" with BBC rod journal?

The 6.8" rods typically have .022-027" side clearance and use the 2.20" rod bearings with the large chamfer to clear the journal radius required. The 6.625" rods with the 2.25" pontiac journal can use the stock side-clearance specs and stock bearing inserts (I think).

How are you checking journal clearances? Those numbers you've got are a bit on the tight side.

they are a 6.625" rods and measurement was done by a dial indicator on the side of the head of the rod bolt holding both rods together and moving them forward and rearward on the journal.

I like to use a feeler guage. Open the rods up to the outside and use a feeler guage between the rods.

yup, feeler gauge, and be careful to make sure you don't 'twist' the big ends, will give a false reading.

Journal and side clearances do seem on the tight side.
