This subject came up in a previous thread. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=702961
So I decided to share some pics. Some arent as clear as I'd like and I didnt take pictures of all the differences. I'll start with the main caps. The 59 caps are 2.625" at the bolt shoulder vs 2.25" for the 69 caps. The outer portion of the 59 cap is also @.375" taller across the crown than the 400. The #4 cap of the 59 is meatier width wise above the thrust surface as well. The # 5 cap 59 vs 69 not alot of difference but the 59 does have the taller bolt shoulder and a bit more beef overall. Look at crown. (fwiw caps on my 2 bolt 455 have same bolt shoulder height and outer center height is similar to the 59 389. 455 caps not as beefy, not just because of bigger main.) I'll add the block info and pictures tomorrow but here's a start... Last edited by BruceWilkie; 07-14-2012 at 11:45 PM. |

Also of note on the 59-60 blocks is the strengthening rib that runs the length of the block on the oil pump side. Very visible on Bruce's picture.

Bruce,
Great post. I can now see why the '59 389 block is so much stronger that the later 389/400 blocks.
