I am looking for some advice on heads and a cam for a 1977 350 that will be used as a daily driver. I would like to raise the compression and get a few more ponies out of this motor. MPG's will also be a concern. The motor is currenty stock with 6X-4 heads and the factory emissions intake and Q-jet. I would like to reuse the Q-jet and the factory intake or an Edelbrock performer. For the cam I was leaning toward the smallest Summit cam, the 2800, but I am open for suggestions. I am stuck on which heads to use. I am thinking 8.5:1 comp should be good to compliment the cam and still allow me to use low to mid grade fuel.
This package will be going in a 4000lb car backed by a 700r4 trans and 3.42 gears. Exhaust will be the current factory log manifolds and dual 2.25 pipes. Thanks for the help! |

i'm no expert but i found this info on wallace's site:
1968 350 heads=code17, 9.2:1 1969 350 heads=code 47, 9.2:1 1970 350 heads=code11, 8.8:1 i'm not sure about the others but i've used the #11's. they have small valves, pressed in studs, and are not drilled for headers. But they did run great on my 350 4bbl, with iron manifolds. |

IMHO its not worth changing heads to get such a small increase in compression. Those 6x-4 heads will work fine on a 350 with the right cam and tuning. You are on the right track with your other plans. The 6X-4's have 2.11 intakes, screw in studs, pushrod guideplates and all the exhaust manifold bolt holes and bosses. The earlier 350 heads for the most part do not have all of these features with some having none. If you are Hell bent on changing heads, then going aluminum is probably a more sensible choice as you would have to make all those other changes to earlier heads just to get them up to snuff with the 6x-4's you currently have.
I wouldn't waste money on the Performer unless you want to clean up the intake area and loose some weight. That is, if you are running the EGR stock intake right now. If you are running an older non-egr intake I'd leave it alone. I ran a 350, 6x-4 combo in our old 79 T/A which was not a light car and it ran 14 flat consistently, drove and idled like a stock engine: 067 cam Performer intake Holley 600 (fine tuned for combo) HEI (with proper timing curve for combo) 1-5/8" 4 tube headers 2.25" dual exhaust with H-pipe Turbo 350 with shift kit 3.08 L/S rear.

The listed comp ratios for the early 350's is not correct, my opinion.A waste of time to get ANY of those heads.
Phil has the best idea, using the 6X-4's . If you could get them milled, maybe .030 it would help. 6X heads were well made. My stcok T/A ran very well in completely stock condition, even though it was a 400 vs. your 350.

Thanks for the responses. I just picked up a rebuilt 400 short block over the weekend. I may consider using this over the 350. The same 6x heads and 2800 cam should make for a nice driver. I have 3 intakes in the garage, a 67 q-jet, 77 egr q-jet, and a edelbrock performer. All three of these should be equal on a mild 350-400 right?

Right, but use the Performer in that trio. The 67 is definately a Qjet flange?...or AFB?
