Default ford f250 whats it worth-needs work-6.0 diesel

i;ve been looking for a 3/4 or 1 ton truck recently, preferably a mechanics special. anyways found a 2004 f250 with a 6.0 diesel that needs head gaskets, asking 3500.00...it has 340000kms on it , is that a reasonable price? pics of the truck look pretty good...truck is 9 hour drive away as well so id have to trailer it back home

doing the work myself is no problem although i absolutely hate working on fords and i should probably just leave it where it is lol....

If that's ALL it needs. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $1,000 for anything that has to be towed home.

I'd stay faw away from anything with a 6.0. Although i'm not a diesel tech , I'm a tech at a Ford dealer and seen in the shop with enough problems between head gaskets, injectors, egr coolers etc...

I've heard the newer 6.0's (maybe 2006-ish?) were a lot better. Maybe you can retrofit? I dunno. Something like this really comes down to just how much of a project you want on your hands.

If you don't need use of the truck often, just get a beater big block gas truck and deal with the bad gas mileage. But if you are going to be putting down some miles, maybe it's worth the effort.

9 hr drive each way.......they would have to pay me $3500.00 plus fuel to take it. Bought a new one in '06, great truck until 103k, then it left me stranded 3 times between 103k and 125k. Total for the 3 breakdowns was $3000.00. Then at 125k it had oil in the coolant! Traded it......on a chevy......a gas chevy. If you want a good one, find a '99-'02 7.3, exellent truck. Bought a new 7.3 in '01.....shoulda kept it.

its pretty sad how a truck that sold for probably 40000 or more is worth nothing after 340000kms. realistically its worth whatever you can sell the tires for in my opinion but i'm looking for a cheap replacement for my 95 gm k2500 with a 6.5 that recently turned 500000km(310000miles). i'd prefer to find a cummins but they are worth quite a bit

Cab will need removed to put in head studs or take motor mounts off and drop and rock motor side to side. If it needs head gaskets going to need oil cooler, egr etc. Doing work yourself, parts alone will run almost 2k. Getting a GOOD shop to do the work will be 3.5k to 5k. Check out forums at ford-trucks.com dieselperformance.com powerstroke.com

Put head studs on it; with upgrades I know guys who swear by the 6.0

For $3,500 if I were close I'd be over there with the cash if the rest of the truck is nice -

I have as well. I prefer the 7.3s but many of them out there now are getting older and nice ones are getting difficult to find.

My best friend is a Ford Diesel Dealer Tech. He said the 6.4 PS diesel is worse that the 6.0 it replaced. He hasn't seen too many of the new 6.7's in the shop yeat, but they have only been out for just over a year.

X2! I have had two thus far and they are great engines. Much MUCH simpler to work on than the later 6.0's etc. Also, they made those into 2003 as the 6.0 was a mid year change. My 2003 Excursion has a 7.3 and quite a few parts houses have argued with me about it...that is until they looked up the part(s).

You said it all right there, yourself!! Wasnt a good season for Ford Diesels . Youll be doing injectors as well, youll have 2,000 in repairs with new studs and having head checked and injectors replaced, and thats if it doesnt need a pump.

that's a lot of miles, other stuff may break, tranny would concern me. If it is not 4WD I would not even consider it. What I see in Montana is 7-8K gets one hell of a nice used truck now. Am seeing totally rebuilt repainted high investment 4WD's, like 70's and 80's for 6K you can get a truck someone has 15-20K in. There are incredible deals out there at least here.
