Thinking of switching jobs, need advice...
I have been into computers, and have held a job working on them for the last 17 years.
While I like supporting people and working with them, I cant seem to make the $ i used to, like everyone else, even now I have more expercience and can work circles around most of my co-workers. I used to have a small business on the side plowing snow for 13 years as well. So I never really took a vacation, I used all my vacation and sick time in the winter. So here I sit, a 36 (soon to be 37) year old man, not married, but a home owner. With owning a home that I bought new in 2004, and the alllout with the banks, I am up side down, and am stuck there. Not bad, I have 3 acers, so I can build a shop when I win the lottery lol. But being I have to pay for the house all alone, I have to make "X" amount per hour/year to live there. I have a friend of mine that has his own trucking company, not much over the road, maybe an overnight every few weeks, but mostly run here in MN, WI, and IA. i am thinking of getting a tractor, and trailer, and run with him. Is there anyone on here that can help me anything I have missed for expences for a simi? Or any advice as to the pros to trucking, and the cons. He hauls flatbed stuff, like bobcats and compact tractors, easy light loads, but in the winter, hauls steel up to northern MN for mining.

Trucking is a good way to go broke if you hire on with an Independent. Companies that are Union is where you'll make good money, all the others pay cheap on miles and no breakdown or waiting pay. I've been both routes and Union is the only way to go. Union pension is good, but you must stick it out for 5 years to get vested rights.
Independents will keep you out on the road for as long as they can, and usually as far from home as they can get you. With a Union job you can be home weekends, every night or at least a couple times during the week. But still home weekends if you run local or short haul. Best money out there trucking is carhaul. Cassens Transport is looking for drivers, and will train you. If you have any carhaul experience they will hire you on the spot. http://local.yahoo.com/info-16242172...ompany-detroit

If you haven't had a vacation in all those years my guess is you're in need of one...that may give you a better outlook on things.
As it happens my company has an opening for a senior IT position, we're in Edina and it's a good company to work for. I'll send you a PM. |

I've got a dumb idea that you might want to consider.
It sounds like you live alone. Have you considered looking for a roommate to share expenses? That would put money into your pocket quicker than anything. You would need to be diligent in checking out any potential roomies, but it is worth considering. |

Press on. Don't quit the day job until a better salary job makes the real offer.
