Default So rare Ive never seen it before

Hey guys, take a look at this, these are the scoops from a 1969 Firebird 350 that I bought as a parts car. It was wierd enough seeing a matching numbers 350 with a scooped hood & 350 hood emblems. No, the car was not modified, the original owner crashed the car in the early 70s and it stood in his backyard until I bought it last year. Sadly, it was too far gone to restore.

I will not be using these scoops on my car, I've got a brand new set of regular non-func scoops.

I think its worth mentioning that I cut the middle section out of the parts car's hood & welded it to a scoop-less hood to use on my 69 convertible. Notice the position of the holes for the hood emblems.

I don't know what to say about the scoops, other than never seen anything like 'em. Maybe someone made custom inserts in metal shop?

BTW, nice work on the transplant of scoopage. I wanted to do that (add scoops to a scoopless hood). Every time I got a lead on a cheap ratty old hood only worth chopping up to salvage the scoops, the owner got all sentimental about cutting scoops out of a rusty old bondo'd hood. On a couple of occasions I even offered above asking price to chop 'em.

Glad to see you resurrected them!

I wonder if the cars were some of the Belgium built Firebirds. Look at the firewall data tag.

BTW, welcome to the boards Tony. I worked for a former South African Company and had the pleasure of working with several of the people that emigrated here in the 80's and 90's. The company was Saftronics, South African Electronics.

Didn't the "FINCH" firebird have scoops that were a little different than the 400 hood? Did this car have sail panels covering the rear quarter windows?

Thats exactly the hood i had, every section was wasted cept for the scoop section, infact, i think i welded a bit of pitted metal to my hood

At first I thought the scoops were custom made, but then they fit so perfect, better than the aftermarket scoops Ive got, there are no imperfections or signs that it was home-made or custom made & who here in South Africa would take the time to make custom scoops?

There is no GM part number or any numbers

Could it be made by a US aftermarket company back in the day?

Apart from the scoops, how many 350 Firebirds had the scooped hood with 350 emblems?

The car also had some type of alarm system that works with the door locks, not fitted in South Africa. Was this a factory option?

Today, I gave the original owner a call, asked him about the hood & the scoops & he assures me it came that way. He said and I quote, 'It came like that with the chrome scoops, its a very rare deluxe model, not a sports model but a deluxe model'. He has no reason to lie to me but I'm not yet convinced, I later took a look at the scoops and there is definitely no part number. His car did however have the deluxe interior, but many cars do. A friend suggested the scoops may have been produced by an aftermarket company such a Moon or the like, round about the time the car was new. I think its more likely it was customised by a custom shop before it reached South Africa, or maybe even at the GM dealer or GM assembly plant here in South Africa. I don't know where the car was assembled, maybe in Europe, I have no idea. I did remove the body tag from the car, I will look for it and post a pic. If you know about the Chevy CamAm V8 & Ford Capri Perana V8 produced in South Africa, it seems possible that the car was customised in SA, but who knows.

I've had these scoops for about a year now and still have NO IDEA WHERE THEY CAME FROM!

I'll clean them up a bit and post better pics for the guys interested in buying them, the last thing I want is for the buyer to feel I've mislead him.

More info on the subject...

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=673567

oh... and here's an old pic I took, the scoops appear to be closed in the first pics.
Seems it can be used with either a wire mess or a solid plate bent to shape, all I have are the scoops.
I remember the owner saying the engine got dirty with the original mess so he closed it with a solid plate.
I'll get better pics soon.

Just thought I should bump this thread as well in light of the new info I've discovered.

Tony, if they are the real deal I'd say keep the and use them. And like you asked in your other thread.... use the 350HO in your Firebird. Make yours a Tribute clone to the rusted out 69.

Could you have possibly uncovered a 1969 Firebird Comanche? This web site says they were all RA 400 Firebirds, but it is the only reference I can find for the chromed hood scoop inserts.
