He has a reputation as being THE BEST Q-Jet expert in the field. He comes recommended highly around here, and I plan on buying my Q-Jet from him when it comes time to build my engine.

Thanks for the link. I am planning to buy a kit from him and try to rebuild myself. Im Basically wondering if one of my cores is a better carb than the other for my application?

17059253 is an 79 Olds carb, like on a 79 TA with 403.

17058266 is a 78 Pontiac carb, so it would be better for your Pontiac engine.

The 78 Pontiac would be my first choice. Also I have one built with a kit from Cliff.

Both of those carbs are equal from a performance standpoint, and EXCELLENT units.

In stock form, the 17058266 is a better unit, having a better venting set-up in the airhorn, and improved POE for the secondaries.

Those advantages quickly disappear with a few simple modifications as described in our book.

One disadvantage to the 266 over the 253, is the large front vent. It requires a matching hole in the air cleaner base and that hole MUST be sealed off to keep dust and dirt out of your engine.

If you have a "Shaker" equipped vehicle it's an advantage, as it locates the base and keeps in from turning. I would also point out here, that the 75-79 Pontiac large front vent carbs have a slightly different vent tube location than the 71-74 units. It's offset just a tad and can be a problem when mixing/matching between those years.

In any case, we have EVERYTHING you would want to completely/correctly rebuild the carb for high performance use, and can supply the correct tuning parts as well, to take all the guesswork out of the equation......Cliff
