Supporting the front end on a 2nd gen
Where is the best and safest area to place jack stands to support the front end? On the subframe near the radiator support or on the subframe behind the front wheels?

It depends on what you are planning on doing once its in the air.
As long as the stands are under the subframe, either in front or behind the front wheels, you'll be fine. Obviously, the further back along the car you place them, the higher the front end will be up in the air. weeeee..

Currently, I need to get under the car behind the engine to remove the clutch housing cover and try to check the "endplay" on the crank (checking to see if the thrust bearing is shot).
In this situation it might be best to place the jack stands up front where they will not be in my way. But in general, I just wanted to get a feel for where others put their jack stands. Obviously, I don't want to hurt myself or the car.

If I'm working on the trans, I usually put them under the control arms where the spring pocket is. That way they're out of the way of any work you're doing and you can still get the car pretty high up in the air.

Wow....I hope you have that thing supported in some other way that I cant see. That angle on the top of those jackstands...scary. I'd be afraid the hood would slide off too...lol. Be careful please. I'd prefer to keep the market on car related accidents to myself...lol. The whole time I was compressing the springs to remove the A-arms recently I kept counting my fingers and keeping my face behind the A-arm. LOL |

You are 100% correct!
The vehicle made it back safely to earth..I just put that up as an extreme example: The front was well supported as the top of the jack stands were contacting the frame where one of the body mount was, so they were kind of in notch area. The possibility of the hood rolling off my swim tubes didnt occur to me untill after I took this pic, but it held ok as the tubes had been a bit squished flat and kinda sticky.

The best place to support the front of a 2nd gen is just behind the cowl body mounts on the subframe.
To check end play, you can grab or gentle pry the balancer to check fore & aft movement. .

Here is I supported mine to clean the bottom, subframe removed.
Jack stands at the front cowl / body seam , rear on the tires on top of 6x6 pt beams. I cleaned the backhalf first, rear end, tank removed then reassembled & did the front. Just high enough to get under it on a creeper Very Stable especially with it sitting on the tires.

Yea...
I've had those jack stands under more spots on this car than a OBGYN's exam chair foot rest! #1 rule of jack stands is to use them..on a solid surface, with common sense
