What year Trans am fenders?
Can you guys tell from the pic what year these trans am fender are from? They are on my base bird but one of the reason I bought it was to scavange the fenders for my 73 trans am if I needed them. I doubt they are 73's as the front is a 70 but I'm hoping they are at least 70-72 fenders...

Nope, they are '73 and later fenders. See the area in between the bolts that come up through the top of the inner fender....that area is flat with no holes on the '70-'72 fenders. On the '73 and later, that area is raised and has the two holes in it for the flat support bars, like in your picture. Also, you can see that the top of the core support has the indentation for those bars, so it is '73-'7?.

Are the 73+ all the same? I thought that the 73's were a one off year? Thanks for the info, I"m going to have to see how they are connected to the front valance, I thought the later models were different there...

74 used the same fender as a 73 with the front lower bracket still attached.75&76 look like the 73-74 without the lower bracket attached....Also there should be a date on the fender if you look for it on the top right around the area the hood hinges bolt to the car...

I know your specifically talking about trans am fenders in the picture but didn't some of the gm "replacement" fenders come with this raised flat area?
Of course in 73 all cars had the braces but I believe I have some 71 fenders that have this flat area and some that don't. I was under the assumption that fenders with the "flat" area weren't originals and had been manufactured later. I never really got a straight story on this.

I have never seen a 71 replacement Firebird fender with a later upper brace on it unless someone made the 71 fender. Those as you know are one year only fender's.

While I'm certainly not that knowledgeable in this area, my fenders are original to the car (a May, 1971 Norwood car) and they are as flat as they can be.

I have a 71 only non TA replacement fender with the flat spot for the brace. It was a bit of a suprise to see it when I opened the hood.
My 71 TA also has the flat spots on them. I can't tell if they were modified or replacements. |

Since the fender is an assembly, i'm not surprised that they did do a '71 replacement with the correct skin and the later inner structure. For 70 and 72s i guess after the original overrun parts supply dried up, you got a 73 up as a replacement.
