Default electric cut outs anyone?

Pricing out different brands of 3 in dual electric cut-outs.
Race ready seems the most expensive,

Pypes is about $100 cheaper but do not have a variable open or closed position (either all open or all closed),

QTP seems to split the difference price-wise and has variable openings, and

summit brand is the cheapest.

Any recommendations? Really will use them for fun because I LOVE that sound , not drag racing.

thanks

I have DMH electric cutouts on my car. I love them.

http://www.dmhperformance.com/

To give you an example of the sounds here are a few videos.
Engine is a Bill Meyer built 461 stroker with Edelbrock heads and Hooker Super Comp headers.

Engine video on dyno with race headers.

Personally I love the sound especially on the street under power! The kids always turn their heads! lol.

I tried to order the DMH cutouts but had trouble reaching him at the time. I went with the Race Readies and they work great. My only issue is the switch did not come with a bracket and is very hard to mount flush. Mine just dangles up under the dash for now. The variable opening is kinda marketing hype to me as I always run them fully closed or open. They can be alot of fun at times on the street...

Thumbs up DMH for me........

I have used the DMH electric cutouts on my 3" Pypes X-Change exhaust system for 3 years w/ no apparent problems. Xlnt. product that functions as advertised.

GTO John, and wheelspin-

Never heard of DMH. Nice web site. Price seems reasonable. Thanks for the you tube vids. That is the sound I want. Great looking car GTO-John. Sinister comes to mind.

Sporter- yeah, I was thinking that the variable opening switch was marketing hype as well. just was wondering if anyone would run it partially opened. thanks for the answer.

The only thing I don't like about the DMH units is the cheesy under dash switch they supply to operate the cutouts. I still want to modify an oem power antenna rocker switch so I can have the cutout switch mounted in the dash as "factory appearing".

Also, I called DMH on the phone and a live person answered and I was very satisfied with their service.

cool idea with the factory dash look! I have an inoperable cig lighter on my firebird. Wonder if that could be modified to work? Making me think about that one. I have a neighbor who owns a Radioshack. I think he could help me with that. Great idea.

Pypes ARE variable open/close. Pypes, DMH and Race Ready are all pretty much identical using the same USA made gear driven motor and VERY similar cnc machined components. QTP and Summit use Direct Drive motors. Summit units are made in China. Not sure about QTP but I can tell you there is NO reason to pay the premium for any of the other brands. The Pypes are $100 a set cheaper soley because of high volume sales which brings component costs down.

would you install this before the X change,or after.
which set up would be optimal for performance.
I have Dougs Headers 1 3/4 to 3" collector into 2.5 X change to the Pypes Street Pro mufflers, Thinking about Flowmaster 40s for more aggressive sound

Arrow Exhaust system details..

Hi Michael,

I have the 3" DMH cutouts installed on the outboard "legs" of the 3" X-Change (after), which works out nicely as the extra length of the X Change adds just the right length to the 3" header collectors for proper scavenging when running open @ the strip.

I have learned that a properly sized exhaust system will run within 1-2 tenths of an open system, and that 500fwhp is the dividing line for upgrading to a full 3" exhaust. Actually, my GTO is all 3", except the tailpipes are still 2 1/2" since the exhaust gasses have cooled by the time they exit the muffs.

I see that Doug's Headers now offer electric cut outs. I do not have any use details to share with you at this time but I am curious as to cost and reliability. Anyone have anything to share about them ?

Forgot about Doug's version. Very nice quality units. They are unique Giullotine style flange. Downsides are they are pretty big (clearance) and they are very expensive.($500+)

This is from Pypes web site. The price is list price. They are available from many sources for under $350/set.

I had a problem with my DMH cut-outs. The motor got loose and I had to drill out the rivets holding the gear cover together. The screws holding the motor were loose and the metal plate was stripped. I tapped larger threads into the plate and went up one size in fastener with red Loctite. Blades seal well in the bore, no leaks. I use a power window switch from an old GM. It is an old style chrome switch and bezel. Looks like it belongs in the '64.

I had earlier style round DMH units that I returned because they leaked. Dave took them back no questions asked a replaced them with their new oval, ground clearing units with better seals. Now, I have the oval 3"cut out on my 68 firebird for 3 seasons and they work great, seal great, no leaks, no gear/ motor problems. I use them a lot bc the kids always say, drop the dumps!

I will post pics late tonight.

OK Here is the best compromise IMHO Magnaflows / Electric cut outs, custom bent:
I have a 68 Firebird 400 convertible. I am very happy with my system.
400/ TH 400
Ram Air Manifolds, ceramic coated in/ out, hogged out to 3 inch at the collector.
3 inch down pipes to 2.5 inch system.
x pipe that fits under a lowered factory cross brace
oval electric cut outs 2.5 inch from dmh performance
Magnflow mufflers, tailpipes in factory locations.

Car runs beautifully with this system. Ran it at the track once and it actually ran 1mph faster through the muffs than wide open.
NO drone through the muffs, I would call the sound aggressive. Higher pitched than Flowmasters.
Absolutely brutal and fun through the cut outs.
Need the oil filer adaptor and and smaller filter.
NO header leaks and maybe a small loss of HP that you would never notice on the street.
Only some ground clearance issue over the most obnoxious speed bumps, but never in daily driving.
I have the electric cut outs wired into a dummy cigarette lighter so you would never know its there.
good for theft deterrent. Imagine leaving the cut outs open and a potential thief tries to start the car!
If you are interested I can get you my part numbers for the muffs, cut outs, and some sound clips.
