Default CHEAP Paint Gun for a Beginner?

Hey Everybody,

Can anyone recommend a good and CHEAP paint gun for a beginner to spray both primer and a final color coat to my tow pick up?

Please consider ease of use and cleaning.

Thanks Again, Craig

Get a Harbor Freight cheapo HVLP gravity feed gun....they usually have a sale right @ $20 on them. When they get too clogged w/paint that you didn't get cleaned out, toss it in the trash & get another one.

FOR cheaper and good I got these ASTRO EVO guns .. Spraygunworld has good prices. These EVO's from Astro are really pretty good.. The 1.4 tip gun for basecoats and the 1.8 tip for primers work really good for the DIY'er..

2 gun set for $198 is not bad cost EVO 4014 and 4018
THey are LVLP low volume and low pressure.. I spray them at aywhere from 12 to 18psi dont need a ton of compressor.

My opinion

I recommend you do a search for "Harbor Freight Purple gun" and for "Spray Gun World" over at the hotrodders.com forum.

You can get a cheap conventional "cup" gun at Menard's for about $30, easier for a beginner to learn on than an HVLP, but will generate more overspray. Use a plastic bag in the quart cup that holds the paint below the gun to minimize clean-up.

The HF "purple" can do a good job IF you get a good one! However, that seems to be somewhat of a crap shoot. I did a single stage metallic job with one that came out respectable although it took 2 tries. Word of advice-don't spray SS in a metallic (no margin for error)! You might want to talk to Len over at Autobodystore.com he probably has quite a few inexpensive guns that will fill your needs.

HF guns can be OK I use one for epoxy primer and it works fine. I get better results with the HF mini gun for base and clear but you cant use it for an all over. I like the devilbiss 670plus gun for base and clear. I picked mine up used on ebay for $98.00 and it sprays awsome.

Hey everybody - Thanks for all the good info! Now I have some good ideas to start with.

Paint Guy - what is the plastic bag deal - how does it work to reduce clean up?

Thanks Again, CraigG.

CraigG: You can get plastic bags that will fit in the quart paint cup that is typically used on conventional siphon guns. they are available at Harbor Frieght, among other places. Line your gun siphon cup with one of them, it will save you the trouble of washing out the cup when you're done. When you're done spraying, you can just put the siphon tube on the gun in a cup of solvent, pull the trigger, and flush it out, and you're done. Saves some time and solvent if you just have a couple of parts to paint.

Hey Everybody,

Thanks for all your input. You were very helpful!

I ordered a HF cup gun for primer and a HF Purple gun for color.

Thanks Again, Craig
