Need help on 69 GP SJ
I am new to the forum and I need a little help on deciding whether to buy a 69 GP SJ.
The car has 49K miles, 428 370HP. The 2nd owner install factory HO intake and exhaust manifolds with correct oil filter. He worked at a Pontiac dealership in Dallas. The car was repainted 15 years ago with the correct Expresso Brown. The paint is a 10 footer. The car is loaded with leather, am/fm, tilt, soft ray all around, rear window defogger, power driver seat, cordova top and more. The car runs and drives great. It has the 14 rally II replaced with new 15 rally IIs. New tires and a rebuild M40, that shifts like a dream. Owner will sell the car for $7,500. I need to know if this is a OK deal. The cordova top was removed when painted and has not been installed. All the holes and rivets are still in place. The owner does have all the chrome and the new top. What would be the cost to install a new top? The interior is shot and almost everything will need to be redone. Door panels, headliner, carpet, seats, dash etc. What would be a ball park figure for totally redoing the interior? Does this sound like a good deal? Thanks for any and all help!!!! I want to get back to my roots and own a vintage GP. |

For that kind of money, with a trashed leather interior and paint that's not great, I'd say that he's about 2-3k too high.

I would question the mileage since the interior is thrashed and the trans has been rebuilt. Probably 149000 miles. Check the rubber on the pedals for wear as if the mileage is 49000 then there should be very little wear on the pedals.

Thanks for the input. The pedals did not appear to have much wear on them. It looks like the car was parked outside without a cover for a long time. The title shows 46,000 actual miles, but that can be wrong.

In the Oct 1995 issue of Collectible Automobile on page 35, there is a 69SJ featured like the one u want to buy. Replacing the cut pile carpet, the leather on the seats, & restoring the vinyl on the dash and door panels will not be cheap. Dependant on what materials cost & who does the work 2-3k minimum. If the car is RUST FREE! & the seller comes down on the price then Yes its a good deal.

Leather costs a bit...carpet and headliner not too big a deal. door panels pretty tough to deal with, have to scrounge them.
Paint is what you make of it. Depends of you like the brown I guess. Sounds like a car you can drive as is though. I'd go $5k if not rusty and feel good. Now assume that brakes, suspension and exhaust, cooling and tuneup required, ac can cost a bit too. Add $3k for all that. Maybe more for ac. if not a pig, go wave some cash in front of him. |

Now 4 the good news side. The intrest in 69-72 GPs is increasing every year. With this the desireable models (any SJ, SSJ, 3or4 spd manual trans, 428/455, etc) will become harder 2 find & buy. The 69SJ u want to buy has SLEEPER written all over it! Whether its restored stock or some mild changes made this is a car worth buying!!!

Sounds like a decent buy, if you can bargain lower on the price thats a plus!! Not to throw a scare at ya, but interiors are the achilles heel for 69-72 GP's. Looking $5000 minimum to redo the interior with all new stuff. Dash & door panels $2500, seats can be another $2000, console ?? A few more $100's for carpet & headliner. Gold is a hard color interior to find stuff used & in nice shape. Can always put in some decent used black stuff and save for the interior down the road.............I like the car for $5000. Good Luck, Dave K.

After looking closer at the pics, I think the $$ might be right on! Is the chrome as good as it looks? How is the engine bay? Under carraige clean? That color really pops.....is it a quality paint job? Any signs of repaired rust.........I'd buy it....DK

That's a good looking GP with some nice options! A very similar looking '69 SJ in about the same condition sold here last summer for $8K, but it was a true 428HO car with a non-matching XG block. I'd say around $6K would be a fair price. You'd have to pay twice that for the same car with a nice original interior and the top done.
Good luck! Grant |

Thanks to all for the input. I will offer $5,500. You can always go up on your offer, but it is hard to go the other way. The underside of the car is in great shape, just that darn interior. Leather in the heat cracks and tears. Considering that the owner has two door panels and it is all orginal except for the HO exhaust and intake manifolds, it is worth a try to buy.
Its only money, right! |

Here is the window sticker off the car. It is a nicely loaded SJ. It even comes with a space saver tire that is not listed on the sticker.
