Default 67 GP Convert. 428 HO - how many made?

So I just got back the PHS on a car that will be my next long term resto project. I held my breath as I opened the letter to see if the car was a run of the mill or special optioned car - hard to tell by looking at the car itself because the original owner did all sorts of crazy mods to it - in fact had it not been a convertible, it would have been compacted for scrap if I had not intervened to save it.
Back to the PHS, as I sit here having to justify to my wife of the major time/expense coming for another gas guzzling garage queen, at least so far she's gone along with the fact its a convertible, plus she'll get to drive often (with the dogs of course) - though she doesn't quite know the full story of the cost involved yet.
So I was relieved to learn that the car was in fact a 428 HO option car with an automatic. Knowing this will help explaining to my wife that it is a rare car indeed and we will be saving it for posterity sake plus the car will hold its value....
Out of curiousity, any educated estimates on exactly how many of these were made? If I'm reading the PHS full size engine production correctly, there were about 434,326 400 and 428 engines made in 1967 of which only 7,424 were 428s (non police equip) which, if my math is correct, means about 1 in 59 full size cars came with a 428. Add to this a total of only 1,457 were HO engines or about 1 in 5 428's were HO or about 1 in 298 full sized Pontiacs in 1967 came with a 428 HO. Assuming the proportion was consistent throughout the full size offering (which possibly may not), that would mean of the 5,856 GP Convertibles made that year, about 19 or 20 were equipped with the 428 HO (both manual and auto trans options).
I know that this production breakdown is not an exact science, but if anyone has more information or some sort of current registry, I'd love to hear from you!

it was probably a bit higher as high end convertibles were more likely to have more options but the low production makes you wonder why they bothered with 428's back then, especially HO's

The PHS docs should break it down some more than that. I have a '67 GP 428HO hard top and I thought the PHS docs say how many 428HO GP autos there were - I'm not sure if it breaks down between hard top and convertible. I feel like there were 270 some odd GP's made with the 428HO/auto combo, but I will check when I get home. I would say your numbers might be off because the most likely full size to get the 428HO was probably the GP.

i used to have a dark purple with white interior and white top 428 HO convert 67 GP. it was loaded to the max and i wish i had not sold it. anyone on here own it now??

I'd appreciate the info - my PHS docs did not have that number, only the total Pontiac engines made for the year and the total hardtop & convert #'s. Would be helpful to know - Thanks!

Interesting thread, wish we knew the source of the information. If those numbers are correct, (indicating a total of 2,386 GP's with the a 428), we could surmise that since 1 in 7.33 GP's were converts that about 326 or so converts came with a 428. Taking that further with only about 1 in 5.1 428's coming with the HO option, that yields maybe 64 GP converts that came with the 428 HO combination with any trans type.
Not exact science, but unless more details could be documented seems like the number could be somewhere between 20 and 100 or so with that combo.

According to records compiled by Fred Simmons in 1989, there were 559 Grand Prixs, HT and Convt, built with the 428 H.O. engine. These same records indicate that there were a total of 205 GP converts built with a synchromesh transmission.

Yep, I saw one at the Iola car show here in Wisconsin, probably about 8 maybe 9 years ago. Tryol blue with the parchment interior. The guys plan was to switch over to a 4-speed, he just never got around to it.

Default 1967 GP Convertible Restoration thread

Hi all, starting this thread to both document the restoration of this car that I saved from going to the crusher several years back. It's a number matching 428 HO car with some nice options. Hopefully this thread will also help anyone else doing such a project and/or be able to share ideas, parts sources, etc. Thanks for looking.

I'm starting a separate post that will focus primarily to document the restoration project. This one happens to be a K code exterior (Gulf Turquoise).

The invoice date per PHS is 5/24/67 (exactly 54 years today) making this a late 67 model production car. A few unusual things about the car - the rear quarters had side marker lights that I thought first appeared on 1968 model years. Another unusual item is the interior is code 585 which is parchment, however the dash pad and kick panels are/were turquoise. Further, it has the strato front bench (power) with some interesting cloth stitching in the center of both front and back seats which if are not factory original, look amazingly period correct, almost the way some of the one-off show cars were made during this period.

There are some codes on the options list that do not appear in the standard options list which seemingly make this a one-off custom order (Column 49 lists code 6, Column 59 filled with code 8, 62 with code 2, 64 with code 2, and a few more which are non-existent at least according to the options order sheet I have). It seems very apparent this was not your average GP sitting on a dealer's lot.

I've seen this before on a car that showed up on the internet. It was posted on a company's sight that sells classics, but I can't remember which one. Anyway, it was definitely a pre-68 big body Pontiac. I want to say it was a 67, but it could have been a 66. If I remember correctly, the seller stated the rear lights were to comply with Pennsylvania law. The seller didn't say whether the lights were installed in 67 or later, nor did they say if it was a dealer install or by someone else. I believe they were the arrowhead-shaped lights like the 68's have.

The Old Car Manual Project website has a colors and interiors booklet that may be useful: http://oldcarbrochures.org/United%20...iac/index.html It shows a Strato bench seat with 'Princessa' cloth inserts was available for a GP. There's also some accessory guides that may help track down those mystery options on your PHS.
