Default Steering gearbox (1966 Bonneville)...

Hello,

I'm due for a new steering gearbox for my 1966 Bonneville station wagon. From what I have read, there are many different steering boxes from other GM cars and a variety of ratios available that will fit my car.

Can someone "steer me" in the right direction? I'm looking for a direct bolt in that will give me the best performance for daily driving. I need to keep it in the $175 (or less) price range

Thanks for your time,
John Thomas

What type of driving expierence are you trying to achieve?
The Lee box is a very cool unit but a little out of the price range you are trying to stay in.
I am not sure if the Jeep Cherokee box will fit in or not.
Have you tried searching this forum or the suspension forum?

here is one thread with 2 different vendors.

Thanks for the link. I'm looking more for an off the shelf unit (this is my daily driver). It handles good now, but I'd like to give it a little tighter feel if possible.

I did do some searching on this site, and I'm leaning towards the box from a 1970 Grand Prix. I can get one for about $120.

Any inputs on this idea?

Thanks again,
John Thomas

John
I am not sure if the G bodies are front steer or rear steer. Again I am not sure if that would make a difference in the mounting.
Steve P and Mike Nixon would probably know for sure.
Hopefully they will comment for you soon.

I think that the 70 GP box would be fine. I tell people to use a 68-up box as it is supposed to have variable ratio steering.
I had put a 79 GP box in a 64 Bonneville 20 years ago. The only issue was the diameter of the steering shaft.

Thanks Steve
So it does not matter if it is a front or rear steer car?

Maybe not. It is all in how the pitman arm connects.
