Default Is it a 389

Hi ; I have a 65 lemans with a 326 motor and I have found someone who has supposedly a 389. These blocks look very similar . How can you tell if its a 389and can you cross bore a 326 and make it a 389?

The block casting part number will tell you what block it is. This number should be located right next to where the distributor hole is.

Also the 2 letter code on the front pass side of the block just below the head mounting surface.

Here is a link to a list of Pontiac block numbers:

Here are the 2 letter code:

Not on a 65 block, the casting number is by the distributor hole, 1968 and up are found there per your picture. 1964-1967 are found near the dist. hole.

This is from PontiacPower Page http://www.pontiacpower.net/engcast01.html :

"Casting codes for 1955 to 1963 are found on the passengers side of the block.
Casting codes for from 1964 to 1967 are found on the distributor pad, except the 421's
Casting codes for from March 1967 on are found on the rear of the block just behind the number 8 cylinder"
