Hey Rich, how you doing...................on my old heads i had a stud sticking up, and thats where i hooked up the neg cable...........I didn"t want to stick that tab under one of the new bolts.............i don"t think its gonna torque down right, not to mention its gonna look like you know what.
Darby.........i was thinking about doing that also to the p/s pump, just thought the motor would be a better ground........not that i would know anyways. LOL. Looks like i have a spare bolt hole in the motor down by the mounts............i"ll look into that. Thanks guys Rich |

I agree with the other posts that a motor mount bolt would be a great place, catching both block and frame electrically as well as out of the way. There are many more spots than headbolts to attach to. For example most muscle era Chevys had the battery ground cable under a power steering or alternator mount bolt. Actually I recall a short 3/8" bolt in an unused hole in the steel alt mount. Whatever. And they were cranking a 454 @11-1 cr. Just about any 3/8" bolt is a good place to attach a cable. Many of those available around the front of a Pontiac motor. On one car I attached to one of the many holes in the front of head on another motor I used a motor mount. Whatever is easy and doesnt look awkward.
I do understand a reluctance to overtighten a bolt in an aluminum head! |

Most, if not all, motor mount bolts are 7/16" and would require hogging out the hole on the cable which wouldn't leave much surface area. Also, the rubber in the motor mount electrically isolates the engine, so a separate ground from engine to frame will still have to be installed. The terminal end of the battery cable is really not designed for much compression, and I wouldn't install it under either a motor mount bolt or head bolt. Basically any 3/8" bolt on the head is going to work fine, whether it is a separate bolt or one of the accessory mount bolts. The old rules apply wherever you end up fastening it - have the contact areas shiny and free of any paint or rust. I use lead based anti-seize compound to coat the threads and mating surfaces to cut down on resistance and future corrosion. I'm not sure that the current anti-seize contains lead, but using it is still a good idea.

Mine is on the long through bolt that goes through the power steering bracket, through the bottom of the alt, spacer, and into the head.
