Default How Much?

Here's a good one for you guys. I needed a pilot bearing. I checked the specs on the 7109 and 6202. The 6202 is the same size as the 7109 but is 2mm wider and sealed on both sides. My crank is machined almost 12mm deep at the bearing install point, enough space that the 6202 will fit so I went to CarQuest and picked one up for $3.65. Just for giggles I asked how much the 7109 was. After looking it up the parts guys looks at me and says "$38.43"! For a narrower bearing with a seal on the outside only! Go figure.

Gotta love the pricing structure on car parts. The 7109 is shown as a specific automotive bearing. The 6202 is considered an "industrial bearing".

FWIW, Stewart

BTW: I used a Springer Tools medium sized pilot bearing/bushing removal tool. http://www.springertool.com/Index.html Very slick indeed and worked like a charm on my press fit factory bearing.

Great Information.....thanks for posting.

I was also shocked at the cost of the 7109, but didn't know there was an alternative. this ranks up there with having to pay $100 for a BOP distributer gear.

I want to order the tool. Which size fits the Pontiac?

Thanks

The 6202 is only an alternative if your crank is counter-bored deep enough. I've read here that not all cranks are drilled deep enough to accept the 6202. But then again some aren't drilled to accept any bearing or bushing. Auto tranny only!

The medium size tool is the one you want. Very slick in deed. There are other ways to get a tight bearing/bushing out of the crank but this has to rate right up there with the easiest and least messy.

How deep does the crank need to be for the 6202? You mentioned that yours was almost 12mm deep. Did you have any room to spare? How wide is the 6202? I will measure my crank and see how deep it is drilled.

I have tried many of the ways to remove a tight bushing/bearing without much success. All I ended up with was a lot of grease sprayed all over the garage, and some in my eye. For $25, it will be worth it if I only use it once.

Thanks again for the info.

The 6202 is 15x35x11 mm. The 7109 is 15x35x9 mm, but listed in Imperial measure. I don't have the decimal numbers at hand (1.385" x 0.596" x 0.434", IIRC).

When I measured the depth of the hole it was 11.6mm so the 6202 should just go in flush.

I like that one part is cheaper than the other by crazy amount. I used a Fafnir Ball Bearing 202KD for the 4 speed. Sealed on both sides. Ebay 8$. Saw people asking 30$.
